Lofty's Roach Soufflé is an instrumental album by American artist Harry Connick Jr., released in 1990.

Presented as the Harry Connick, Jr. Trio: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, piano); Benjamin Jonah Wolfe (bass); Shannon Powell (drums).

Lofty's Roach Souffle was inspired by Connick's experiences on the film Memphis Belle: "In case you're curious about the title 'Lofty's Roach Souffle', last summer I was in England filming Memphis Belle, which is a World War II movie about a B-17. The actors were sent to boot camp at an SAS training ground where we met Lofty. Lofty was introduced to us as the premier survivalist in the world and he showed us one survival tip after another. D. B. Sweeney, who played the navigator in the movie, and I became friends during the shoot. D.B. also happens to be a fine chef, and he quickly noticed that Lofty could make food out of almost anything. Lofty was the master of outdoor cuisine! D.B. figured that Lofty might even be able to make roach souffle. I wrote a song to remind me of this experience."

Squeeze is the self-titled first studio album released by British group Squeeze, released March 1978. The album title was simply Squeeze in the United Kingdom, but in the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries the album, like the band, was marketed under the name U.K. Squeeze.

The initial A&M Canada and A&M U.S. LP pressings were released on limited edition red vinyl.

According to Glenn Tilbrook the process for making their first album was rewarding but also frustrating: "For me, U.K. Squeeze wasn’t really very representative of what we were doing at the time. When we worked with John Cale in the studio, he threw out all the songs that we had written. When most bands make their first album, they go in and do a lot of stuff that’s been going down well in their sets; well, that wasn’t the case with us. He told us to write new songs – which we did. He was inspirational guy to work with, but I felt that it was almost like we were writing for what he wanted rather than what the band itself was. When you’re in a position to be making a first album, it’s (A) awe-inspiring to be making an album, and (B) difficult to assert yourself against somebody who knows the ropes."

The album received a negative retrospective review from Allmusic, who said that producer John Cale forced Squeeze to pursue a musical direction that ran contrary to their inclinations. They singled out the two tracks produced by the band themselves ("Bang Bang" and "Take Me I'm Yours") as the only ones which show any sign of the artistic success they would later reach.

Native Sons, released in 1984, is the second album from The Long Ryders, an American alternative country and Paisley Underground band, principally active between 1983 and 1987, and who reformed in 2004 to do a reunion tour. They have only performed three times since 2004.

The Long Ryders were originally formed by several American musicians who were each multi-instrumentalists, influenced by Gram Parsons and The Byrds, with country and punk rock influences. They were named after the Walter Hill film, The Long Riders.

Although two members were transplants from the American South, they became a popular Los Angeles rock band, forming in the early 1980s and originally associated with a movement called the Paisley Underground. With a sound reminiscent of Gram Parsons, Buffalo Springfield and The Flying Burrito Brothers, but with a harder edge, they anticipated the alternative country music of the 1990s by a decade.

Drummer Greg Sowders was married for a time to singer Lucinda Williams.
I can't remember how or where I got my Long Ryders albums/tapes/CDs, never saw them in concert, but they've been in my listening rotation since college in the 80's.

I had a couple of their albums already in my collection, but I found this one (VG+) for $2 at the record store today. Shhh... I would've paid much more.

But as I'm listening to it now, waaay too loud, I can't help but think that I'm probably 1 of less than maybe 100 people who knows every word of every song.

I Robot is the second album by progressive rock band The Alan Parsons Project, released in 1977.

The album was intended to be based on the I, Robot stories written by Asimov, and Woolfson actually spoke with Asimov, who was enthusiastic about the idea. As the rights already had been granted to a TV/movie company, the album's title was altered slightly by removing the comma, and the theme and lyrics were made to be more generically about robots rather than specific to the Asimov universe.

The original vinyl release had a gatefold-style cover; the inside spread had printed the lyrics for the non-instrumental selections and a monochrome photograph of Parsons himself.
I've seen this one several times in many record stores, but I saw it on a list last week... "Top 10 audiophile albums from the dollar bin", so I picked it up today (VG+ and it has the gatefold cover ) for... guess how much... yep, $1.

FWIW, here's that list of top dollar bin listens:
  • Alan Parsons - I Robot
  • Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman
  • Sade - Diamond Life
  • Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
  • Tracy Chapman
  • Supertramp - Crime of the Century
  • Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
  • Steely Dan - aja
  • Paul Simon - Graceland
  • Roxy Music - Avalon

Hmmm... I've got all of them except Sade... I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Quote:
The Golden Hits of Jerry Lee Lewis is an album by musician Jerry Lee Lewis that was released on Smash Records in 1964. It was Lewis's first album with the label after leaving Sun Records.

After his marriage to his 13-year-old cousin Myra and the resulting scandal that ensued when he toured Britain in May 1958, Lewis was blacklisted from radio and his singles flopped. By 1963, he had scored only one minor hit (a cover of the Ray Charles song "What'd I Say") and, frustrated by what he saw as Sam Phillips's indifference, signed with Smash (a division of Mercury Records).

Mercury held the presses, thinking they had found Lewis’s comeback hit, and it might have happened if the Beatles hadn’t arrived in America, changing radio playlists almost overnight. Mercury didn’t really know what to do with Lewis after that. One of Smash's first decisions was to record a retread of his Sun hits.

Although competent, the remakes on The Golden Hits of Jerry Lee Lewis could never measure up to the magic found on his early Sun sides. The opening 25 seconds of 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On,' the first number tackled by Jerry Lee at the sessions, reveal the nature of the problem: so crude and essential as recorded by Jack Clement in 1957, the song is garlanded in Nashville with crispy-EQ'ed hi-hat percussion, an intrusive walking electric bass, and a syncopated rhythm guitar that feels like an annoying kid brother tagging along looking for some hijinks. The reverb applied to Jerry Lee's voice sounds contrived and artificial, sweetened with chirpy female backing singers who were meant to complement but end up sounding as if they'd wandered into the wrong party.

Matt Fink of AllMusic argues that "Great Balls of Fire," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Breathless" and "High School Confidential" are given an "overall bigger, booming sound with backup vocalists and a brass section, but most would probably still give the originals pre-eminence."

1999 is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on October 27, 1982.

1999 was Prince's breakthrough album, but his next album, Purple Rain, would become his most successful. 1999 may be Prince's most influential album: Its synth-and-drum machine-heavy arrangements codified the Minneapolis sound that loomed over mid-'80s R&B and pop, not to mention the next two decades' worth of electro, house, and techno. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.

The album was ranked number 163 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
