Well, I'd say the answer depends on what you're looking for in particular.

The general consensus is that the early 40s band with Ben Webster and Jimmy Blanton was his best, and this is the definitive collection of that work:

There is a 1950 album in which Duke took advantage of the then-new lp medium with a collection of long-form works that took advantage of the longer playing time:

I am partial to his late works. My two favorites:

For something a little different, there are the small-group recordings from the 30s, collected here:

That should keep you busy until a real expert in Ellingtonia decides to weigh in.

Bill Bruford - One Of A Kind

stood in line for three hours in the August Texas sun to get front row center seats (general admission to a small bar) on this tour. BB, Jeff Berlin, "unknown" John Clark and yes Dave Stewart with a Hammond on stage. Excellent.

Bought this album when it came out. Saw him with Frosty doing this album a couple of times, once in a small venue, once opening for Ike and Tina. I jammed with his son Donovan once. I Played guitar in a blues group that had a B3. There is nothing like that sound and feel. We opened for Cold Blood. This album really brings back those times. Killer stuff.

Love Lee, his version of 'Stormy Monday' is my favorite and made it on many mix tapes.

So dynamic. But then he had absolute control of the dynamics.

We auditioned a B3 player once. He had been playing by himself so long that it was impossible to follow his tempo changes. I told him he needed to practice playing with other people. Or buy a stinkin' metronome!

Deep Purple - Machine Head

of course Jon Lord's all over the Hammonds - loved him from when I first heard 'Hush' and still get delirious over the opening of 'Lazy'.

Uriah Heep - Salisbury (vinyl)

^^^ Check out that cover!!! Who would have thought that would be circa 1970?

Anyway, went to a record show today and came away with an armful of great vinyl. And a empty wallet!
