"I realize that somebody playing free music isn't as commercial as a hamburger stand. But is it because you can eat a hamburger and hold it in your hand and you can't do that with music? Is it too free to control?" - Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) discussing commercial success in the music biz

Ok, maybe you have got me there. Then again, "San Francisco" was just talking about the phenomenon: Donovan WAS (part of) that phenomenom.
He even made fun of it while a part of it:
"....beatniks out to make it rich,
Oh no,
Must be the Season of the Witch"
What could be more hippy than
"I will bring you gold apples, and grapes made of rubies,
That have shone in the eyes of
A Prince of the Breeze"
70 yrs old and this album (Sunshine Superman) still trips me out. No need for drugs, just the music (and of course the dream-like images evoked by the lyrics).

Not sure why - I stumbled across the Mellow Yellow LP at a Flea Market and it has been one of the favorite spins of late. The wife was particularly impressed.
