Don Sebesky - Giant Box

Forgot about this one.

In '73 the jazz/fusion Gods got together and made this possible. The first track is a mash up of Stravinsky's "Firebird" and McLaughlin's "Birds Of Fire" that morphs into an extended jam with Cobham continuing the rolling percussion, then segueing into a blockbuster style fusion version of same before returning to the theme - 13:58 of experimental bliss. Next up is an interpretation of Joni's "Song To A Seagull" played off by Desmond and Carter with DeJohnette and Sebesky ably filling in, bringing further pensiveness to the tune. The first two tracks are worth the price of admission alone.

Check out an abbreviated list of those participating:

Don Sebesky - piano, electric piano, organ, accordion, clavinet, vocal
Bob James - piano, organ
Ron Carter - bass, electric bass, piccolo bass
Billy Cobham - drums
Jack DeJohnette - drums
George Benson - guitar
Airto Moreira - percussion
Grover Washington, Jr. - alto and soprano saxes
Joe Farrell - soprano sax
Paul Desmond - alto sax
Ralph MacDonald - percussion
Milt Jackson - vibes
Freddie Hubbard - trumpet, flugelhorn
Hubert Laws - flute
Rubens Bassini - conga
Dave Friedman - percussion
Randy Brecker - trumpet, flugelhorn
Phil Kraus - percussion
Harry Leahey - guitar
Jackie Cain - vocals
Roy Kral - vocals
Alan Rubin - trumpet, flugelhorn
Garnett Brown - trombone

Originally, I had arranged to go to America and make an album using all sorts of material, but then Carla Bley sent me a cassette with some of her ideas. It was very different from what she had done before and absolutely in line with what I like. So I thought it would be much better to do that than to struggle desperately to find things that work together.

Sleep deprivation, what a concept . . . Still, what I heard was awesome.
