The Last Waltz (2 CDs): The Band & a few friends
I also have the video on DVD and Blu-ray.
Why the attachment to this concert you may wonder, or not? Well, because I was there
In the spring of '76 we were wondering if we could get tickets as they had not gone on sale yet... then comes an announcement from the Graham folks that there would be a mail in lottery for 2,000 tickets. Winterland was a small venue and would hold 5,000, IIRC, packed in tight. I believe they limited it to about 4,000 for the concert, plenty of space, it was like going to a party with lots of friends.
As happened I had recently received my income tax refund, $500+. The lottery worked as follows: Two tickets per envelope sent in. 1,000 envelopes would be drawn. We had to enclose a self addressed return envelope and a money order for $50, i.e. tickets were $25 each. What a bargain. So, I bought 10 $50 money orders, loaded up 10 envelopes and mailed them.
First they drew out 1,000 winning envelopes and put tickets in the return envelope. After that they sent back the losing money orders. Well, months later I receive an envelope and opened it to find two tickets, woo hoo, I'm going
Soon after another two winning envelopes arrived, I had 6 tickets!!!
We didn't know who all, if anyone, besides The Band would be there. Then rumors began that Dillon had been spotted it town... We were not prepared for the array of folks who were to be a part of the event.
This was held on Thanksgiving day 1976. When we were allowed in, at 5:00PM we found the main floor was set up with 3 buffet tables providing the traditional turkey dinner and 1 table for those vegetarians amongst us
After dinner various things took place until The Band came on at 9:00 and the music flowed until around 12:30!!!
Without a doubt the best concert of my life
