In my enthusiasm for the genre I decided I wanted to hear what jazz sounded like when it was invented just after the turn of the century. So the trombone player and I made a trip to New Orleans to find the old style Dixieland music.

It happened in a place called Preservation Hall which was used by Dixieland players since the beginning. You would pay at the door, enter an ancient very plain hall, choose one of the folding chairs and listen to the band. The band was made up of very old black men who were part of the very invention of Jazz about 60 years before. They weren't the best musicians and there wasn't a good singer in the group. But what history! They had preserved their music all those years. They were the innovators and inventors and I got to hear them play together in the same style they used at the very beginning of the genre.

At the moment I'm hearing "My bucket's got a hole in it" and it takes me back to that night in New Orleans when I heard the original Dixieland jazz musicians do their thing. So what am I listening to now? Well a digital remaster of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band recorded in the early 1960's. My toes are tapping.
Is this what you are listening to or can recommend ?

No, the CD I have is entitled just "Preservation Hall Jazz Band." I tried to find it on Spotify but failed. I've probably had it since the 1980's when it was mastered and distributed. The band changed quite a bit after the originators died off. Their style now is more like contemporary Dixieland - Pete Fountain, that sort of thing. The album above shows players that are far too young to have been there at the beginning. Might be good music, though.

That one may be good. If it has any tracks that were cut in the 1940's through early 60's you should get the original style. Listening to these guys is the equivalent of getting original blues style from Robert Johnson recordings. The band I played with was more modern, accurate, clinical. Listening to these guys is another experience. They are rough around the edges but thoroughly in love with what they play and they play it with a lot of love. Hope you enjoy it.

Includes all the songs he is famous for and more. What a voice, captured in his prime. Listened to disc one on the way to work this morning and will listen to disc two on the way home. Supposedly this is the CD set that is identical to the original double album vinyl release, complete with his banter.

I've been to New Orleans a few times and have never had much luck tracking down much Dixieland style jazz. The only place in the French Quarter that I am aware of with consistent Dixieland is Fritzel's European Jazz Pub, though I've never been to Preservation Hall. I think the riverboat cruises do as well, though never been. I was there again last month and most of the clubs we went to were modern jazz, blues, funk, etc. All great music!
