Like many vocal artists before her, Diana Krall is working to expand her audience with Wallflower. The well known jazz pianist/vocalist has made an album with no jazz tracks at all. Wallflower is a collection mostly of pop ballads. In some of the tracks she plays an electronic keyboard and she even has a few tracks with male vocals singing harmony with her.

The album is very well recorded, mixed and mastered as is all of her work. The selection of tracks is what I would consider to be fairly uninteresting but she did do a good job with Desperado and the single up tempo track, Yeh Yeh. If you expect her to handle Operator in the same manner as, say, Jim Croce, you will be disappointed. She transforms this bouncy tune into a ballad and gives up all of its life and character.

I tend to like Krall's stuff. I've always thought of her as the 21st century torch singer and she has done a creditable job with many of the jazz standards and even pop tunes done in jazz style. And her piano technique has grown immensely over the past dozen years or so. But truthfully, Wallflower left me flat. I liked a couple of the tracks but, basically, her style fits the classic jazz world better then pop. Hopefully she will succeed at expanding her audience base. She is a talented artist. But I tend to doubt that Wallflower will carry her very far in that direction. Perhaps the next pop album.
Great write up.

I have tried for years to be a fan of her's but have never been able to accomplish it.

Given the familiarity of the tracks, I gave her yet another chance to reach my heart.

It's not to be.

I will continue to look to Patricia Barber to fill this genre in my listening rotation, she has never let me down.

Everything I Have Is Yours: The Best of the M-G-M Years (2 CDs): Billy Eckstine

I've loved this mans voice since I was a kid... that's lots of decades

A sound so beautiful to my ears it almost brings tears to my eyes

[edit] Sarah Vaughan joins in some numbers which is quite nice.
