I am thinking about getting a Sony Bluray player to go with my HDTV. Audio wise I have an older Onkyo receiver hooked up to a pair of Bose speakers. Since the Oknyo receiver is older it only accepts analog L/R audio cables.

I have been pondering the best way to hook up the Bluray player to the receiver. Option 1 is that along with HDMI to the TV I could have a direct connection from the Bluray player's L/R output to the receiver's input. Option 2 is that I would connect the L/R cable going to the receiver into my TV's L/R output. That would allow the TV to convert the digital audio coming from the HDMI into the analog signal that would then go to the receiver.

My question is what would be the best option, directly connecting the player to the receiver or connecting the receiver to the TV and have the TV convert the digital signal. I know it varies among the different TVs and players out there.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Since it varies so much, there is no real answer. If you had no other sources than BRP and TV, I would suggest going via the TV to avoid a need to switch audio and video separately. If you do have other sources, I would go with sending the L/R audio to the receiver.

BTW, there is no such thing as composite audio. It is analog audio.
