Is the gold cd worth the extra money for these Mobile Fidelity discs? Do they really sound better?

I haven't been able to find much information but was looking at the John Lennon discs. The Gold CD's are $30, while the normal CD's tend to be around $15.

Just looking for someone that knows more about these or could link to a good resource on the topic.

"Gold" CDs offer no advantage. The important question is, are they mastered identically? If they are, then they will sound the same.

It depends. I have the mofi Cars album on vinyl. They used a 1/2 speed master from the original tapes and it sounds excellent. Much better then my CD or older album.

Thinking of that...I'm going to go and listen to my cars album.

I don't think anyone believes that gold CD's actually sound better anymore. The whole concept was born out of the fear of the eventual decay of the standard CD when CD's came out. It has been found that regular CD's don't suffer reduction in quality due to degradation.

Many gold CD's will sound better, such as the Mofi ones, because they are meticulously remastered from the original analog masters instead of second or later generation masters that many CD's were made from. Again with Mofi you get collector's limited edition packaging. They also hold their resale value.

I have many. I believe it is worth the $30 to demo a regular CD and the same gold CD title yourself. I believe you will feel the gold CD sounds better. Then you will need to decide whether it sounds $14 better. If you are on this forum you likely have great equipment and will be able to tell the difference. If you listen to mp3's mostly, there is nothing wrong with that, but there is no reason to buy a gold CD.

Google "mobile fidelity gold cd" then click "shopping" and you will see the absurd resale value these things have. Check out this link.

I know my Dark Side of the Moon gold CD from the original master recording contains tons more detail than the regular version. I hear a lot more background voices and details that are absent in the standard version.

Dumb enough to spend lots of cash on this junk!

Then they don't know what they're doing. No one would use the same master for both vinyl and CD.

But the OP's question was about CDs. Please try to stay smewhat on topic.

LOL, MOFI only uses and calls their offering Gold CD's they don't use standard CD's. That's all they use. MOFI claims to use the original master (for records and CD's), that is why they are $30.00. The OP asked if the Mofi Gold CD was better then the standard CD, for the same album at $15.00.

Interesting. I interpreted the OP's question as, is the "gold" part better? But it didn't occur to me that MOFI made only gold CDs, and therefore his question wasn't about gold, but about MOFI—and, as you note, MOFI's mastering in particular. We are in agreement then, mastering is everything.

But nobody in his right mind would use the same master for both LP and CD. They may start from the same "original master," but they remaster them separately for the two media.

Perhaps differently mixed to the disc from the master?
