I'm getting used vintage av receiver as stereo amp for listening to mainly music from iTunes/MacbookPro in my study room. The speaker will be small KEF sitting next to the computer, i think its called near field or something. Will be connecting from MacbookPro 35mm line out, either digital or analog depending on receiver. The reason of getting av receiver is i want the FM radio, and I'm too poor for a proper audiophile setup with separate dac. I have options for Marantz SR96 which does not have digital input and Harman Kardon AVR65 which has a digital input. Each is about $100. Or Onkyo TX-SR603 for $180. Which one do you think will give better sound?

(Ideally I should get something like HK 3490, but it is not available for sale here. And buying online from US is not an option due to hugh shipping cost.)

Harman AVR65, based on capability listed, is the best option.

Use a mini Toslink to toslink cable to connect your macbook pro (inside the headphone jack is an optical jack) to the digital in on the Harman Kardon.

my opinion: Vintage usually means that the receiver lacks video capability and was manufactured over 2 decades ago.

McIntosh Labs! What am I listening to?

Thanks. I got the AVR65 and now waiting for toslink cable to arrive. The sound is better than I expected using normal rca jack but I have difficulty adjusting the location of speakers to get the best of sound due to limited computer desk space. The speakers are about 1m from my ears.
