Audioengine P4 or Wharfedale Diamond 10.1..

These are the 2 speaker sets I'm focused on at present, although I'm fairly certain the Diamonds would be really testing the boundaries of my modest desktop, which is why I'm currently swaying towards the P4s. Anyway, this set-up is strictly near-field listening.

Any further recommendations on the speaker front also welcome, so long as we're talking similar price range (no more than $350).

My main concern at the moment, regardless of future speaker choice, however, is a value-minded, diminutive 2-channel amp whose performance belies its' hopefully minimal cost Let's say sub-$200 to start (for a hoot, ok?). Here's hoping...

Second that, I have one in my garage and it is awesome, very nice, full sound. Using a simple Ipod docking cable and its great.

All right, stupid question: Why are you buying passive Audioengines plus an amp, instead of active Audioengines?

Good question, and I've got an answer..

I have roughly 9 1/2" of height for any speaker on my desktop, because I have cabinets that hang on either side from the "wings" up top. Decent look, real daft design, right?

Ok, so...I wanted the A5, but they are 10.0” (H) x 7.0” (W) x 7.75” (D).

A2 are out, as despite their ideal size, I felt like they may be too great of a compromise.

P4s seem to fall perfectly in-between. True enough, I'll lose out on some low-end presence with the P4s 4" woofers as opposed to the A5s 5-inchers,
and of course I've now got the additional amp expense, but the P4s seem just right at
9" (H) x 5.5" (W) x 6.5" (D).

I think...

Pairing this with the upcoming Asus Xonar Essence might be a nice little combo, eh?

Don't know why anyone would still be glancing at this thread, but if any of the helpful posters that wrote in here see this, I ended up going for the A5s after all.

Gonna have to do some re-configuring on my desk, but got a great price on a pair.
Bought some stands from audioengine and they should be here by middle of nexxt week.

I'm sure in the future I'll want seperate components, but this is perfect for the time being...and, I can still get the Asus Xonar essence as a DAC.
