stock Galaxy S4 > digital USB audio out >> USB OTG cable >> FiiO E17 >> modded Fostex TR50RP

I have a similar setup: GS4 + USB OTG cable + Fiio E17 + Sennheiser HD590

I can't get audio output through the cable; it comes out the external phone speaker only. How does one enable digital USB audio out on a stock phone? Does it require a rooted phone or custom ROM?

It doesn't require a rooted phone or a custom ROM.
Just plug and play, if the different elements of your setup are OK.

I am wondering if you have separately tested the different elements of your setup:
Galaxy S4 >> USB OTG cable adapter + USB cable provided by FiiO >> FiiO E17 >> headphones

. Galaxy S4 in USB host mode:
Galaxy S4 >> USB OTG cable adapter >> simple USB peripheral like USB mouse or USB keyboard

. FiiO E17:
PC or Mac >> USB cable provided by FiiO >> FiiO E17 >> headphones

USB OTG cable adapter:

New music player in town, USB Audio Player PRO: the best sound quality music player to my ears on my setup (Samsung Galaxy Note 3 > Objective DAC > SoundLab Neco V3 amp > MrSpeakers Mad Dog headphones) for the time being
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.extreamsd.usbaudioplayerpro

Native USB audio & eXtream USB audio (USB Audio Player PRO, USB Audio Recorder PRO):

I am wondering if the great sound quality of USB Audio Player PRO is due to the "direct interface" architecture like the audiophile Audirvana music player for Mac OS X.

Today I just bought USB audio player pro .
I am very happy with this new app USB audio player pro

Source : Samsung note 3
Dac / Amp : cypher labs Theorem 720
Headphone : Sennheiser HD 700

Sound Quality : so far very good and best android app for music , it is better than I use USB audio recorder pro"

"I have a note 3 and a galaxy s3.
Both perform extremly well with my two dac, an asus muses and a chinese custom board with xmos usb.
In my home I have also 2 pc, a portable sony and a nuc intel with dedicated linear power supply, but the quality is not the same as my android source + UAPP PLAYER.
I use for my nuc jriver or Pupmpd,
I like the sound of Pupmpd, but the android source are more enjoable and have the best sound.
Anyone have similar experience?
Why android sound so gooood?"

I tried Fiio dac and I didn't find any improvements with it vs. using direct analog out with my Galaxy Nexus. So no USB DAC. Instead I OTG-ed 32GB USB drive to the device and connect directly to my receiver amp. Sounds great.

The GNex has a Burr-Brown DAC. Never found it wanting. Not sure about other phones. I read the Galaxy S1 with the Wolfson dac especially with Voodoo Sound is very good too. The less device my source has to go through the better me thinks.

Am I missing something?

How do you connect the FiiO DAC to your Galaxy Nexus? What is your complete setup? (i.e. Which music player / Which DAC / Which amp / Which speakers or headphones do you use?)

As far as I understand, your receiver amp amplifies the analog stream already amplified by the internal amp of the Galaxy Nexus (i.e. double amping; i.e. the receiver amp or 2nd amp amplifies noise and distortion introduced by the internal amp or 1st amp):

music file > music player running on Galaxy Nexus > digital audio stream > internal DAC > internal amp > more or less distorted analog audio stream > amp

Usually, the cleanest path is the following:

music file > music player > digital audio stream > (internal or external) DAC > (internal or external) amp > speakers or headphones

The Hugo is amazing! The only decent cable I can find that works for USB Audio Player Pro to the Chord Hugo is the Vertere Micro USB OTG cable. Are there others around apart from the Maplin / Lindy stuff? If you have an iPhone then Onkyo HF Player works well with Audioquest Lightning cables.

The Vertere USB OTG cable won't fit.
It's a micro USB (OTG) (plug) to standard USB (plug) cable: the micro USB (OTG) plug has to be inserted in the micro USB receptacle of an Android device, the standard USB plug in the USB receptacle of a USB DAC.
And the Chord Hugo doesn't have a standard USB receptacle; it has two micro USB receptacles.
A micro USB (OTG) to micro USB cable will fit.

A link to a list of USB OTG cables is included in the first post:
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1393599/enable-usb-audio-on-any-android-4-0-smartphone-tablet#post_21633143

A list of USB OTG cables:

The USB receptacle of an Android device should usually be a micro USB receptacle.

The USB receptacle of a USB DAC should be:

. a standard USB receptable or

. a mini USB receptacle or

. a micro USB receptacle.

Hello Danba I have a very simple question. Does the smartphone automatically send (digital) audio to the usb port once I connect the dac via otg? Do I have to configure anything on the phone? Do I have to use a special player?

I have tried that with:

A chinese tablet with Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean), Processor single-core Cortex A9 1GHz, GPU 400MHz, 1 GB RAM, something like this one.

The tests with an USB OTG cable worked fine with 2 different mice and keyboards.

And then I tried with the CA DACMagic 100, but no success!

The light on the DAC indicated a signal but no sound.

I did a google search about some possible incompatibility but no results.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Apparently, it doesn't have a native USB audio feature.
How about using the USB Audio Player PRO app, which includes its own USB audio soft driver?
There is a free trial version of USB Audio Player PRO available on Google Play store.
By the way, USB Audio Player PRO is my preferred music player.

Thanks for reply, I'll give it a try!

YES, that works, thanks, DanBa!

I will keep that free trial for while.

You have the pro version, right?

If so, is there a way to play files stored in another device, in case a NAS logged in a Windows lan?

TIA
