Teac HA-P50 USB DAC/amp: a standard USB DAC and an Android-specific USB DAC!
http://www.whathifi.com/news/teac-un...r-built-in-dac

Standard USB DAC & Android-specific USB DAC:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/andr...0#post_8492288
http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/andr...5#post_8732417

A standard USB DAC acts as a USB Device.
A standard USB DAC can work with a PC, a Mac or an Android-powered device acting as a USB Host.

An Android-specific USB DAC acts as a USB Host.
An Android-specific USB DAC can work with an Android-powered device acting as a USB Device.
An Android-specific USB DAC can't work with a PC or a Mac, because a USB Host can't work with another USB Host: USB is a master-slave communication bus, USB communication can only take place between a master device (i.e. USB Host) and a slave device (i.e. USB Device).

Teac HA-P50 as an Android-specific USB DAC: "A", iPod/iPhone/iPad/android connection port
"Playback at CD quality (44.1kHz/16-bit) is supported for devices running Android 4.1 or later (this does not guarantee operation for all Android devices)."
http://sega360.wordpress.com/2014/07...C%92%EF%BC%89/

Docomo Sony Xperia >> regular USB cable >> "A" > Teac HA-P50 >> headphones

Teac HA-P50 as a standard USB DAC: "B", computer connection port
High resolution audio playback can be supported using USB Audio Player PRO or USB Audio Recorder PRO.
http://sega360.wordpress.com/2014/05...E%A5%E7%B6%9A/

Android device >> USB OTG cable >> "B" > Teac HA-P50 >> headphones

USB powering:
The Teac HA-P50, acting as a USB Host or an Android-specific USB DAC, powers the connected Android device.

A self-powered standard USB DAC (i.e. charging USB DAC), acting as a USB Device, can also power some USB OTG-capable Android device using standard USB ACA (Accessory Charger Adapter) mechanism.

A USB OTG device is configured to USB Host mode supplying or drawing power, or USB Device mode by ACA/OTG software/hardware measuring the value of the ID resistor of the USB interface.

According to the value of the ID resistor "R"
. the Android device should act as a USB Host, interwork with the USB DAC acting as a USB Device, and supply power to the bus-powered USB DAC
. the Android device should act as a USB Host, interwork with the USB DAC acting as a USB Device, and draw power from an external battery
. the Android device should act as a standalone USB Device, and draw power from an external battery
. the Android device should act as a USB Device, interwork with a USB Host, and draw power from an external power source.

Currently, Samsung uses different value of the ID resistor than what is specified in the USB ACA specification (i.e. USB Battery Charging 1.2 specification).

http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/andr...5#post_9614980

Google and Android device makers should support USB ACA (with standard ID resistor values), only one small step further from USB OTG.

Shocked

I was just sitting here, mind drifting, and my thoughts turned to digital audio.

I've recently modded my Note 3 to a new kernel and was looking for an audiophile program. I'm not satisfied with what it has to offer.

Now I do have a wonderful Xenos headphone amp but it has analog inputs...then my mind jumped over a bit (I'm an Aspy/ADD) and I thought about my
Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro 5.1 Audio Sound Usb Adapter sitting in my USB rack on my laptop. Hmmm, I wondered. I Googled the idea and ended up here...a place I used to hang out at years ago...I went into the bedroom, got my phone and OTG cable, removed the USB dongle from the laptop, inserted the OTG cable into my phone, plugged in the dongle (fully expecting that I may need to get some kind of driver) and it lit up! Ok...how am I going to get the audio out. The cable was already plugged into the dongle, so I fired up Spotify and turned on my HT amp. It was playing!
So, at this point, my $2000 Vaio laptop has just been replaced by my cellphone which plays through HDMI, movies.

Only you guys would appreciate a story like this.

A US$100 Android One phone: Spice Dream Uno
http://gadgetstouse.com/full-reviews...o-review/25182
http://googleblog.blogspot.fr/2014/0...droid-one.html

It supports OTG: it is very likely compatible with the high resolution audio-capable USB Audio Player PRO.
It runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and is upgradeable to Android L: it will have a native USB audio feature.

As it has a Snapdragon 801 SoC like the Samsung Galaxy S5, it should support USB OTG / USB Host: it is very likely compatible with the high quality USB Audio Player PRO.

It runs Android 4.4 KitKat, the last update before Android L: it should have a native USB audio feature running Android L.

"Encore mDAC turns your mobile device into a high-end player."

"Really a nice product. This little box is just as good (in fact better) than devices at 2/3 times the price.
I was a bit skeptical as there were no reviews but decided to give it a trial. All I can say is WOW!!
Used with the Galaxy S4 and USB Audio Player PRO the difference between the native player and the combination above, the sound quality is markedly superior; Deeper, cleaner bottom end, fantastic clarity on the upper end and let's not forget an incredible soundstage.
Used with the Shure 535 or 846, I would doubt that you'd be disappointed."

There are 3 main types of Android car USB audio:
1. Android device as storage device; car audio system as player - DAC - amp - speakers
2. Android device as storage device - player; USB DAC; car audio system as amp - speakers
3. Android device as storage device - player; car audio system as DAC - amp - speakers.

1. Android device as storage device; car audio system as player - DAC - amp - speakers:

Android phone as storage device >> regular USB cable >> car audio system: car audio player > car audio DAC > car audio amp > car audio speakers

The car audio system operating in USB Host mode provides power to the Android phone operating in USB Device mode.

http://www.cnet.com/news/using-your-...stereo-how-to/

2. Android device as storage device - player; standard USB DAC; car audio system as amp - speakers:

Android phone as storage device - player(s) >> USB OTG cable >> compatible USB DAC >> car audio system: car audio amp > car audio speakers

The Android phone operating in USB Host mode provides power to the standard USB DAC.
As often as possible, a USB OTG/ACA cable should be used so that the USB ACA-featured Android phone operating in USB Host mode is also able to be charged by a power supply at the same time.

Enable USB audio on any Android 4.0 smartphone/tablet

3. Android device as storage device - player; car audio system as DAC - amp - speakers:

Android phone as storage device - player(s) >> regular USB cable >> car audio system: car audio DAC > car audio amp > car audio speakers

The car audio system operating in USB Host mode provides power to the Android phone.
This car audio DAC (i.e. Android-specific USB DAC) is obviously not compatible with PC or Mac. It is compliant with the Android Open Accessory protocol 2.0 (AOA 2.0).

Enable USB audio on any Android 4.0 smartphone/tablet

Onkyo HF Player: DSD music player amongst others
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...jp.musicplayer

Contrary to USB Audio Player PRO (UAPP) also able to play DSD music files, the Onkyo HF Player is a generic Android music player, like Neutron or Poweramp, interfacing with the Android media player framework which can only output 16/48 for the time being.

UAPP can play DSD files and output DSD over PCM (DoP) streams towards a USB DAC.
These days, many USB DAC are able to handle DoP streams like the LH Labs Geek Out.

The Onkyo HF Player can play DSD files and output legacy PCM streams towards a USB DAC. These PCM streams are only 16/48 due to the current Android media player framework.

The Onkyo HF Player shall be able to output DoP streams, but the minimal bit rate of DoP streams is 24/176.

Upcoming Celsus Companion One: "very affordable" DSD / PCM384 USB DAC
http://www.head-fi.org/t/736452/revi...#post_10954355

"If you want a portable DAC that can do everything, I mean DSD128 native, PCM384, USB cable connection to PC Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices, plus wireless streaming via Airplay and DLNA at 24/192 (fastest wifi streaming on the market), wait for the high-end portable DAC from a new brand that I am launching in late November.
Curved frame machined from a single block of aluminum, gorilla glass top and bottom, exceptional build quality unlike anything on the market. Price? Very affordable."
