Specifically, powered desktop speakers, price is fairly flexible but less than $500 for sure. Suggestions would be appreciated

Try the new Focal XS Book. Retails at $399/pair.

I still use the behringer truth as well, but the Swans really shine with music for me.

Can you elaborate?
I'm also looking for monitors. I'd like to keep it to $600 or so for a pair but I'm not that price sensitive. I'm considering KRK Rokit 6s or 8s, JBL, ADAM A3x, or Focal CMS.

The thing I don't care for in the Swan is that the amp is in one speaker and the other speaker is passive. I'm not sure if it matter's that it only has one amp but it seems cheap.

If you are looking for a monitor, I would suggest the Mackie MR5 or MR8. I have the MR5, and they are awesome. Each speaker has two separate amplifiers, a 50w amp for the main driver, and a 30w amp for the tweeter. They also have controls on the back for customizing them to your environment. They have incredible accuracy and pretty darn good bass response for a 5" driver. The MR8's are even better. However, they are
very flat if that's something you're not looking for.

I have the previous generation of these so I haven't heard these exact ones.

The Behringer Truth 3030a is the other monitor that i have kept around, its definitely a "bigger" sound, and the price is excellent, but the Swans sound a bit more pleasing to me. Very smooth without losing detail.
Its a stereo amp, dont see downsides to it, only requires one plug as a small positive, I suppose.
Would be nice to be able to do side by side comparisons with these, anyone care to buy all of them and let people come over?!

TV's ain't theaters buddy.
