Everyone,

I'm a total newbie (have only owned HTIB setups before), and have a small apartment living room where running cable for a 5.1 or a 7.1 setup would be a big issue. I'd like to upgrade from TV speakers to a 2.0 or a 2.1 system that will be used both for listening to CD's and watching movies.

I tracked down an inexpensive pair of Mirage OM-9's that I'll be buying if they're in good working order. I'm thinking that I should buy a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver so that I'm future-proof, and can upgrade to more speakers when I buy my own house and can run cable through the walls. Is this a good idea? Can a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver handle a 2.0/2.1 setup? Would a lower-end Yamaha or Onkyo receiver be a good receiver for this setup? What should I look for in a subwoofer?

Like I said, I'm a newbie. Thanks everyone for their help!

For an apartment you may not need a sub with those OM-9s - frequency response is down to 38hz. Nice speakers and a great start to a nice sounding setup. A decent AVR should work just fine.

What is your budget for an AVR?

Thanks for the help! I'm looking to spend no more than $400-$500 for a receiver. What would you recommend?

The Denon 1713 can be had for $449. It comes with Audyssey MultEQ XT.

Go 3.0/3.1 if you are accustom to having surround sound and watching movies, the center channel will help a lot and give the vocals better clarity, then you can eventually get some wireless surround speakers or adapters.

Hands down I would go with the Pioneer 1022-k because amazon has (and Bestbuy DID but should match) it for $250 and its a $450 receiver. A rear receiver can run 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 5.0, 5.1 pretty much every thing.

How much are you going to spend on speakers? The Pioneer FS52's and matching center are always good for cheap.

Guys,

I picked up the Mirage OM-9s today. The seller and I spent about 45 minutes with different CDs and movies (I brought the Avengers Blu-Ray, The Joshua Tree MFSL edition CD, and Led Zepplin 4 with me), and they sounded great. It was a no-brainer for $200.

I think that they have enough bass for my apartment, but I see what you mean about a center channel. I'm going to get a receiver next, then get a center channel a little bit later.

I'm thinking about picking up that Pioneer receiver. Will Best Buy match an online price, or should I just pick it up from Amazon?

I just pulled the trigger on the Pioneer 1022-K from Amazon. Can't wait to hook it all up next week!
