Can a 2.1 sound setup have the same dialog clarity as a 5.1 system?

Yes, but only if you sit precisely in the center of the room left to right. Anyone else on the couch off to one side, even a little, will not get the proper balance.

People off to one side can still get better clarity than with a center channel that's sub-optimally placed (like most are) in terms of wall/floor/ceiling and other object proximity.

The phantom image just won't be centered except where directional speakers (wave guides, acoustically small dipoles) are configured for reduced output from the nearer speaker for off-axis listeners.

That's like saying that people who never wash their hands are more likely to get sick. biggrin.gif

Yes, of course people should place their speakers properly.

Absolutely! I use a pair of Hsu HB1-Mk2 horn loaded speakers as well as the Hsu VTF-3 MK4 subs. The sub is self powered so I use a pair of Bottlehead Paramount 300B monoblocks driven by a Transcendent Sound Grounded Grid preamp. This is all hooked up to a flatscreen monitor and for all intent and purpose, the dialog is locked to the center and there is no real 'sweet' spot. One can wander around the room and it all sounds good.

All of the low level detail that was somewhat lost with my fairly recent Onkyo 7.2 rig was recaptured.

I have also noticed that I am running it 3-5 dB lower with the tube gear than the SS since I am hearing more.
