Hi folks.

Asking if there is a device better than WD TV to play lossless audio files without computer, direct from HDs. The WD does not handle 2 big HDs at same time (memory issues?).

Thanks,
Ed

What size hard drives are you using? Also, what's your budget? One option would be to use a NAS instead.

Was using 2 x 1 TB drive. Now running a MacMini, but want to use it for other purposes, not in a LAN.
The goal is a good standalone player, and spend no more than 300/ 400 bucks

That helps. Are you looking for another media player or would a blu-ray player work? Many of last year's models and the new gen players offer external HD connectivity. For media players I would check out Popcorn Hour and Dune.

Great. Make sure you check out the media players forum here on avs for owner's impressions.

Well, not so good news from Dune forum. Gapless issues, poor UI...mad.gif
Seems (all of them?) media players focus more on video, leaving no room for an elegant and efficient music playback solution?

Yes, it's good that you checked out the forum. I'm not much of a media player guy for music. I generally use my laptop and Media Monkey or JRiver via DAC or AVR for music.

Post your questions over in the Netgear NeoTV 550 thread. There are some very knowledgeable people posting there. – It does gapless audio playback (but not for .wav files).

I recently got a NTV550 to stream music from a computer to my HT/Music setup, but you can also directly connect a USB (and/or eSata) HD to it. I’m not an expert on this product, and it’s the only “media streamer” with which I have any experience, but after some initial, minor setup hiccups, I’m extremely happy with it. – And for $80 at J&R right now, for my purpose, it's been a really fabulous deal.

FWIW > It’s been discontinued. (Thus, the $80 price.) No Pandora, Mog or Spotify. YouTube doesn’t really work. Etc.

Dave
