Apologies if this is not the right section for my question. I am hooking up an old receiver of mine for use with outdoor speakers. I'd like to buy some sort of unit that will allow me to send the audio from my iPhone to my receiver. I don't have music on my iPhone I only use Spotify. Does anyone know something that will allow me to do this? I know my brother has a Sonos system but I'm looking for something cheaper.

Sorry I should have said I don't want to dock it. I want to be able to control it while outside. I just want to send the audio of my phone to a device that is hooked to my receiver. Preferably via wifi. I don't think Bluetooth will have the range.

Any apple Airplay device will work. If you don't want to replace your reciever with an airplay enabled model, get an applets for $100, or an airport express for less. My 6 year old airport express was purchased to be a wireless print server, and has since been retired to the living room as a source for my audio there. It even has optical audio out.

I too would suggest an Apple Airport Express if your receiver has an optical digital input.

Does the Airport express require a constant ethernet connection? The receiver for outside will be situated in our laundry room and there are no ethernet connections anywhere near it. I was hoping I could set the Airport up through a wired connection then unplug to be wireless. Can this be done?

I see the old version is available for $80.

Do you own an ipod? Connect it to your receiver, control Spotify on it via your iphone with this.

I do something similar with my iPod, a Pure i20 dock and my iPad, but i'm using Rdio and Remotedio.

The Apple AE does not require an Ethernet connection, a stand alone device that only needs access to WiFi. I have three AEs at home. I think an AE is pefect for your needs. You can access AE seemlesly with an iPhone or iPad. Check the Apple sight for refurbs, essentially new units.

Definitely get an Airport Express, you can score used ones pretty cheap on ebay. I got a previous-generation one (A1264) in great condition with the original packing/documentation for $60 there. Just be careful which one you buy, I believe you have to stick with one of the wireless-N models in order to stream directly from your phone (I know that at least some of the older units do not allow streaming from direct from your phone, but a computer only -- not sure at which model the cutoff is).

A better value can be had from the Apple Refurb Store. Current gen AE is $85, previous gen is $69. Full warranty plus 90 days tech support.

Can't you only stream iTunes to an AE? He wants to use Spotify as he has no music on his phone.

Sporify app on an iOS device + AirPlay would do the trick.

Like I said, original (wireless-G AE units -- I believe) will only stream iTunes and only from a Mac or PC. Not so with newer units.

And those are indeed very good deals on refurb AEs. Wish I would have thought about visiting the apple website before I bought mine.

So when you say stream directly from you phone do you mean without wifi

And maybe I'm not seeing something in the pics on the net but I don't see an optical port
Thanks

No, the iOS device would need to be connected to the same network that the Airport Express is on. E.g. -- on my iPhone, double-click the home button, swipe left, tap the AirPlay icon, and you're streaming whatever's playing on your phone.

The Airport Express has a single audio out that doubles as an analog 3.5mm out or a mini-Toslink digital out; it isn't a full-sized optical connection.

Airport express, any generation, will support full audio streaming from any Airplay enables iOS device or iTunes on a Mac or pc. Any app on your iPhone - spotify, pandora, music - will send audio over. The old ones ony support whatever wifi flavor (b, g, n) was current when they were released.

I think I'll get the AE. My only concern is if one day I ever go to a non-iOS device I'll be back where I am now. However I still have 1.5yrs on my contract, plus my wife now wants a Macbook..... smile.gif

Since it'll be going in the laundry room I think the older generation model will be best. Is there any reason that I would need the newer model?

If you need dual-band, the new one. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

I ordered the previous gen AE and it's already shipped out. One more question, is there a way to send only the audio to the AE while watching a movie? I want to test showing movies outside and will hook the iPad to a projector but need to send the audio to the AE for our outdoor speakers. Can this be done?

Hooked up the AE last night and everything is working as I wanted it to. Thank you all for the suggestions.
