Is a $1,000 pair of speakers too much for a $500 receiver?

No, unless it is happens to be a really crappy receiver. At $500 its probably adequate for many/most speakers made unless they are terribly inefficient and/or present really demanding impedance loads.

Think about upgrading the receiver if/when you find it lacks features,.surround processing modes,.connectivity, etc you need or want, or if you fall in love with one of those aforementioned difficult speakers.

I wouldn't bat an eye if you told me you bought $10k speakers to pair with it.

It better not be cause mine cost more than that and they sound fantastic.

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

If you're in love with the speakers, NO.

As long as that purchase is within your budget go for it, going forward you may want to upgrade the receiver (if you are not happy with it).

Certainly not!

I would recommend the PSB Image T6 speakers for almost any receiver in that price category.

They run $1300 per pair and are some of the best speakers you can get for under $2000.

Other excellent ones are the Monitor Audio Silver RX-2 for $900/pair and the Monitor Audio Silver RX-6 for $1300/pair.

The Wharfedale Diamond 10.4 speakers are also very good for around $800 per pair.

By the way, if you have not already purchased a receiver, I would strongly recommend the Harman-Kardon HK-3490 receiver, which is only $400 and IMO is worth twice the price; an incredibly good unit at a steal of a price.
