I currently have a plethora of craigslist aquired speakers I love to listen to. Using an Adcom GFA-545 I typically just plug mey PC into the amp with a 3.5 to rca cable. But I would love some USB hard drive support or streaming from PC and I realize my Boxee has that. I also know some Emotiva stuff has these capabilities for not too expensive as well. However I am familiar with the Boxee and it can decode tons of file formats with an easy-to-operate interface (have extra PC monitors I can use for a display)
What are the thoughts on using something like that as the source straight into the Adcom? Are there better options to get at what I am trying to accomplish?
The boxee will also offer the streaming concerts etc for the extra 5 channel setups i have if I chose to make it also dedicated 5 channel music room.

What are your thoughts? I'm ready to commit some more funds towards the 2 channel stuff, but need to find some sort of pre/pro that is up on digital media and is not lotso money...I am not ready to go crazy on a 2 channel setup.

Hi Sburnett,

This is in case you don't already know:

The Boxee Box has an HD audio problem (sound dropping out) that can never be fixed (It's a problem inside the Intel SoC). If you intend to never use HD audio, you should be ok.

HD audio meaning from the HDMI?
I will likely use the LR RCA out since the adcom just has RCA in.

Hmmm . . . I don't know. I only had my Boxee a week before I returned it.

If I recall correctly, the SoC has the problem decoding HD audio - DTS-Master Audio and Dolby-Digital True-HD. So I suspect it will depend on the source material, and not the output.

But if you are outputting on the RCA jacks (which I never used), then there is no reason to use HD audio, so you should be fine.

Cool I appreciate the info.
I have had issues with it, I won't lie. I love the remote compared to other media boxes and it is super compatible with formats so I can't seem to part with it. Not to mention the hacks.
Do other devices like the Dunes or some other brand supposedly have better DACs or something that make them better for this application?
If emotiva was the way to go, do they have these features?

Edit: As I sit here streaming to my Sony S590, I guess I could grab another one of those...it even does SACD if I ever find some....not to mention it has most the features. Hmph...I'm guessing there are 100's of options these days aren't there
