I plan on getting an HD 990 for my new CD player, hooking up my parents old equalizer - since the HK has the proper inputs - and then topping it all off with a new pair of Polk TSI100Bs.

Thank you all so much again for your replies!

I've had an HD 990 for about 2 years, running it into a Rotel/KEF 2-channel. Best CD player I've ever had. Also got mine about 1/2 of list. Wish I could afford the matching amp.

I'd call H/K the default 2-channel receiver these days for good reason. I'd say it is the best mid-priced option around for most use cases.

I will also recommend the LSi7 from the Polk Ebay store, I have heard the LSi9 and they sound wonderful, the tweeter is phenomenal.

Does the 3490 sound significantly better than the 3480 ? I have a Denon DRA-397 that has far better resolution and overall better sound than my 3480 playing into PSB B25s. Is watt hi fi wrong about the Yamaha ? Also, where does NAD stand in this group ?

Thanks Bruce

I can't compare my 3490 to anything as it's the only 2 channel receiver I've owned, but I think it sounds awesome. Right now I'm listening to Eddie Van Halen on Vinyl through it. Simply superb.

Just an update!

I picked up the HD990 from eBay for 275.00 as an open box. The previous owner had only used it for photography purposes, and it hadn't even been plugged in. I have decided to go with Paradigm Monitor Pro bookshelves for my new speakers! They sound amazing, and the HK3490 doesn't even seem to break a sweat with them.

You're wrong.

http://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hifi-components/amps/a-s500___g/?mode=model

It covers 4 ohms.

Had to sign up and clear this up so that people googling don't get incorrect information like I did.
