My Yamaha receiver, probably everyone's receiver can do it, has the option to play standard 2 channel music in 5 channel mode. Is this what most people do?

Yes. Except a few audiophiles who will tell you that its not "pure" enough for them or not the way its intended. But you asked about most.

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

Thanks, I like playing it in 5 channel too, just wondering if I was way off track. I'm new to having a good receiver.

Are you listening in "7 ch stereo" or one of the surround modes?

I only have 5 speakers, my Yamaha has a CinemaDSP option in MUSIC called 5ch stereo. The other choices are things like listening in different theaters, but I don't like those modes they seem to just distort the sound. Oh any my receiver is only 5.1, more than enough for the size of my apartment.

I have no idea, I didn't even notice that.

P.S. Can anyone message me an invite for what.cd or waffles please? I'd really appreciate it.

No. I listen to 2ch in 2ch mode as I don't like any of the multi-ch stereo modes I've heard.

I usually listen in 5.1 but on occasion will switch to 2 channel stereo.
I go with what sounds best to me.
Try every configuration available and pick the one that sounds best to you.

Only listen to multi-channel if the audio is processed for that effect. smile.gif

+1

There is no soundstage or imaging when listening to a 2 channel source in 5 channels, and this is a big part of my enjoyment.

There really is no wrong way to listen to music, if it sounds good to you then you're doing it right.

I pretty much always use my Yamaha's '7ch Stereo' mode to listen to 2 channel music with in a 5.1 configuration. The beauty of that mode is that you can adjust the percentage of signal to the other speakers in 1% increments from 0 to 100%. You can tailor just how much of the effect you want.

Straight 2 channel playback sounds flat and boring in comparison now. Soundstage depth and width and localisation is very much more real and lifelike with the additional channels.
