I bought the black pearl Focus SEs. So my next move is a pair of high power monoblocks to power them. I am thinking I should, in the interest of economy without sacrificing, purchase the Emotiva XPR1s. I am also looking at Parasound Halo, Brsyton, McIntosh, etc but the Emotiva are so much more bang for the buck.

I'd buy a used Bryston 4BSST/2. You'll get over 5oo watts channel at 4 ohms and the balance of the 20 year warranty. Audio Adviser is selling refurbished 4 BSST/2 for about $3800. They are really show samples.

They are also selling the Halo mono's but that's much more and not sure if it's really refurbished or a show sample like the Bryston.

I would also look on all the Audio sites that sell used equipment and I'd get a fairly new 4BSST/2. It's easy to find out the serial # that Bryston updated the 4BSST/2 and make sure you buy one of those.

Then again get what you like and can afford.

The amp comparison in this thread is interesting:
Need New Amp

So when I went to szeedyk's house to pick up the speakers he has a pair of seriously solid European dobermans, very impressive doggies. Made my two german shepherds look puny and soft

From reading the amp comparisons and looking at my bank account, I think the Emotiva XPR1s are going to be my choice. I have an electrician coming over to check out making the 15s into 20amps for the two receptacles I will use for the amps. Now I need a preamp.

Just wondering why you need a pre amp in this price range of equipment, shouldn't a very high end player already have a really good one? Just curious.

Well so the CD (or other device) player plugs into the preamp and the preamp plugs into the amps, or the CD player plugs into the receiver and then you have pre-outs on the receiver that plug into the amps.

Waiting on a quote from the electrician for the work creating two dedicated 20 amp circuits back to the breaker panel. He came and eyeballed everything yesterday.

So you have individual components for every part of the chain? I am only used to integrated amps and recievers. But it seems to me in this day that they would have good enough pre-amps already in the amp/receivers of these price ranges, and don't most blu-ray players and cd players have the pre-amp built into them?

They have line-level outputs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_level

The modern "preamplifier" functions are source switching, volume control, and in the case of weaker than line-level signals (like a phono cartridge), amplification.

Plug your CD player directly into your amplifier and you will see that it needs attenuation (in most cases) not additional amplification. *some have volume control and negates this statement

Warning: expect extreme LOUD from the amplifier/speakers, so don't do it.

I'll be back later...

I think I will get the Oppo 105 for my CD player. I like the fact you can use it for a DAC for USB music files.
http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-105/

Still need to choose a pre-amp.

CD/CAT storage tower

Have to share this, I recently purchased a pair of versatile storage units for cd and dvd media but they can also be used to store cats.

Great thread, I'm looking to do the same exact thing with a similar room setup. Hope to listen to the Focus SE on Sunday and make a decision relatively soon. Might use my Onkyo PRSC886 and also my Emotiva XPA-5 while I shop for a better pre/pro and a more powerful amp. I'll be adding an Oppo 105d as well.

Were you able to audition the Focus SE?
I got my custom blinds today, the amps are being delivered tomorrow afternoon.

Loved the Focus SE. Need to be patient, go and listen to the Focal 1038be again and then the SE again. Hopefully can do this by the end of the weekend and make a purchase right away.

Those Focal look nice as well.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I listen to big bands, jazz from the 30s-60s, electronic dance music, bluegrass, funk, and all sorts of stuff.

I don't have the most diverse listening taste. Mostly classic rock type music with a heavy dose of Pink Floyd.

I think it's down to the final 3. The Focus SE, Focal 1038be and I'll throw in the Seaton Cat12.

Hope to listen to the Focal again today. I really like the smooth highs of the Focal but am not 100% convinced the lows hit hard enough for me.

Got my amps today, heavy bastids. I just ordered the Emotiva XSP-1 and the Oppo 105 and balanced cables, think I am done spending money. Oh ya I will probably go down to Best Buy and get a LED for the system, nothing major, maybe a 55"

I think we are going down a very similar path. I've ordered the Focus SE, will get an Oppo 105 and have been eyeing the Emotiva XPR-1's and the XPS-1 as the preamp.

Standard finish in black ash. Looking at about 6 week wait. Gives me plenty of time to shop for XPR-1's and a pre/pro. Maybe the XPS-1? Still need to figure out how to listen to my iTunes library and watch an occasional concert DVD.

Yes I am thinking about snagging a tv at Best Buy for the concert dvd, heck you can get a 55" LG for $800. One of my friends just bought a 4K but I am not spending that kind of money on one when they will drop in price dramatically one of these days. I got my Oppo today, waiting on my amp stands, and a Bell'O tv stand, and then the electrician on the 11th. I have a 55" LG in my bedroom, probably tote it down to the living room and see how it looks before I buy anything additional.

I started putting my Bello tv stand together today and the cam bolts sheared off, so I decided to take the piece of crap back. They took it back at Best Buy without any problem. I will look around for something else, but also maybe next month at RMAF I might find just the one I want? Sure don't get much for $400 these days...

I have everything set up without a tv stand. I have one on order and it will be here Monday. I have been listening to Oscar Peterson Trio with Samantha-Peyton, she seems to approve. Then I switched over to Tiesto Club Life - Vol 3 Stockholm and this setup is so awesome, there is a lot of quick heavy bass in the electronic dance music and all this power and these speakers everything from the lowest lows to the highest highs comes through even at robust volume all at the same time, which my other system ran out of power when i did this and the highs would fade out when there was too much power demand for bass, NO problem with that now!

I recommend you get the Emotiva balanced cables for your interconnects, and the Emotiva 10 gauge speaker cables, which come with banana plugs and spades but you will only need the banana plugs.
