hi folks
I've a pair of 901's that have been singing for 25 years now.. Love them. But - I'm seeing all these smaller systems that don't have quite the same real estate requirements..

So - the question is, what compares to the 901's, and is wall-mountable? I'm presuming that a subwoofer will be part of the configuration.
And yes, I've suspended my 901's in the past - we don't have a suitable space where this can be done now. frown.gif

I've looked at - but not heard - the AcoustiMass 5's - also Bose. I don't really want to upgrade my receiver as well.

thoughts?

If you love those Bose speakers, with their bloated, highly colored sound qualities, be sure to avoid any speakers that accurately reproduce sound.

Better stick with Bose all the way.

So you are looking for something to wall mount for primarily music? Is this due to a space/aesthetic restriction or just what you have traditionally done? Would you be open to a subwoofer?

Hi -
Thanks - this will be for music only, and primarily to save floor space (new house).
Subwoofer - I completely expect, and don't have a problem with.

cheers
Steve

My problem is that I have a fairly close association with someone who is a Bose 901 aficionado, and to this day he can't really be happy with a conventional loudspeaker.

I view this as a risky experiement, so I will recommend a 2.1 system that is fairly inexpensive but actually sounds very good:

A pair of Infinity Primus P163 and an Acoustech PL200 subwoofer. Add a good AVR and see if you can still stand to listen to conventional speakers.

I had 901's and had them suspended. Every member in my home banged into them, a lot of head aches. As some else on this forum said, I bet they were good for Head Banger Music. I am embarrassed to say this but, I liked them. I'll go hide now..

(LCD - Sony KDL - XBR4) (Receiver - Sony STR-DA4ES)(Blu Ray - Oppo BDP-83) (PS3)( Dish Hopper DVR With Sling) Speakers (L & R - Paradigm Studio 20) (Center -Paradigm CC-470) (Surrounds & Back Surrounds - Paradigm SA-15R in walls) (Subwoofer 1 - Sunfire HRS-12) (Subwoofer 2 - Paradigm PW-2100)

I enjoyed my 901's for 20 years as well before replacing with Martin Logans.

For something small enough to be wall mountable, I think the Mirage OmniSats have always held their own. Better sound than the Bose cubes, but the omnidirectional sound has similar characteristics as 901's. Paired with a beefy sub and crossed over high enough, they could be an option. They are also very forgiving of placement. I use them for surrounds in my theater and they work well even mounted very high. And you won't bump your head on them like 901's.

Lots of folks simply used the pedestals for 901s and quite successfully.

I've always wondered if a good set of bipoles might not give some of the 901 fans the more diffuse soundfield they are looking, only with better drivers and better frequency response output. smile.gif
