I am looking for a device like an external sound card or audio interface that will handle my audio rather than the crappy sound card in my PC. I like listening to my studio headphones alot and I can hear how crappy the source is. Any ideas, and what's the difference between the 2? Also Im not wanting to record I am just interested in playback.

If you have a hdmi output, use hdmi, then you can dl foobar, jriver, etc & make sure set the output for wasapi. If you dont then a better soundcard will do with DAC convertor.

this right here!

no sense in chasing your tail down the rabbit hole in fruitless efforts of finding anything better.

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

+1 for the Shiit stack, the Modi + Magni at $198 is probably the best bang for the buck.

The sound quality of the audio interface built into system boards has improved dramatically in the last 3-5 years, and if your machine is reasonably new it might not be crappy at all.

What makes you think that the audio interface in your PC is crappy?

If the audio from your PC is crappy you can usually obtain a very signficiant upgrade with a Bheringer UCA 202 USB auido interface that runs about $30 from many sources here in the States.

Maybe I'm just to picky but after seeing the Schiit products I feel there is not enough power running through my headphones which are pro audio. I think I'm gonna get a headphone amp. Thanks all.

The Fiio E5 headphone amp runs about $20 and IMO does well with high impedance headphones.

It needs USB power and if you don't have a spare USB port to plug it into, you can always get a low cost USB power supply.

I second Arny's recommendations of the Behringer UCA-202 and FiiO E5. I still think they're bargains.

I used the combo for a time before I decided I wanted a audiophile headphone amp, so I spent $250 + shipping from China on a well-reviewed import. What did I learn? It doesn't sound better, but it does have a nicer volume knob. Live and learn, I guess.

I'll plead no contest on the volume control knob issue. The E5 uses an up/down button to control the volume which by the way ensures nearly ideal channel tracking as compared to mechanical volume controls.. ;-)

Sorry, but Arnyk, I have seen you recommend that UCA-202 unit before and I just want to make sure I am correctly understanding it's purpose. I want to output music (flac, wav, etc) from my computer to my Pioneer VSX-1015tx (which I just picked up off Craigslist for $30!) To power 2 Pioneer sp-bs22 speakers. The idea is that because the avr does not have an hdmi input, which my computers sound card can output, I need to use the headphone jack of the sound card to rca's to input to the avr, in which case I would be using the DAC in the sound card, which may be of questionable quality. With the UCA-202, I can output the music digitally through USB and then allow the DAC in the UCA-202 to convert to analog, and then send the analog signal through rca's to the avr, resulting in better sound quality. Is this correct? Basically, I am unable to use the DAC in the avr because I have no way of getting the signal digitally from computer to avr. Correct? Thanks for the help! I know this may be a subjective question, but I appreciate the opinions, is the DAC in the external UCA-202 unit going to be noticeably better than the DAC in my on board sound card? (Gigabyte motherboard, core i5)?

I take back what I said about headphone amps. Im gonna get this one listed below and eventually a better one also listed below. I have come to relieve my headphones have a high impedance and need more power. Thats why they sound better on my PC and sound crappy in my android. But they could sound better. My PC headphone jack pushes more then a phone but its hard on the ears.
