"Poll: How much did you spend on amplification?"
Preamp - Krell KCT
Amps - Krell FPB 350mcx
List price when new $20,000 or so.
Bought used (separately) on eBay two years ago.
My feeble ears (I'm 61 now) tell me they are probably right around as good as it gets, at least, as good as it is going to get here.
I've done the Pro Audio route long ago, and had an Acurus A-250 ($1,000) amp for many years with passive pre.
To sum up the sound in a word here, let's say, "unambiguous".
I don't feel anything is missing, maybe the lowest bass, but the speakers have output below 30hz. Maybe a subwoofer someday. Probably a Rythmic or two.
Music has all the overtones in the right amount, sounds wonderful. Very powerful even at low listening levels. Solid stereo image, nothing wanders around the soundstage.
Lots of "jump" factor, grabs your ear even when you aren't paying attention.
The system is always on, it isn't green, the rack at idle draws 370 watts (TV off). That's the only drawback, a dollar a day to feed it.
Visitors first comment is usually "wow", at the end of the first tune.
The amps themselves were a tremendous upgrade, much more than I expected.
No looking back. No regrets. No endless tweaking, haven't touched anything in a long time.
