I would like to listen to dsd over async usb using audirvana. I guess once the ha1s are back in stock i could compare and always return if no improvement. That seems to always be the short answer.

I suppose it could be system dependent so YMMV.

^REgarding difference in SQ between 105 and HA1...

Rich seems to hear a moderate difference in favor of the HA1.
Personally I also hear a difference, which I consider slight but noteworthy in favor of the HA1.
Eljr says no difference at all.

So I do think we can determine that it is dependent on a particular set of ears and a particular system.
I think we can all agree that the difference is not night and day.
However the bigger differences are the feature sets of the 105/105D vs HA1...

They have very different features that any given person may find more useful in one compared to the other.
The HA1 can handle DSD128 and DSD256 via the async usb inout, has high gain option, analog audio inputs, Bluetooth,
and my personal favorite where you can connect an iPhone/iPod/iPad directly to the front USB input, and probably a couple other things I am forgetting right now.
If any of those are features that you think is worth the price of the HA1 after already owning a 105, then it's a personal choice you'd have to make.
If you are budget conscious and happy with your 105 and it's headphone amp / DAC / preamp options, then it may be better to stay with that.
If you don't need the additional features of the HA1, then again you may be better off staying with the 105.

One thing is for sure though. The HA1 is one awesome piece of equipment.
Anyone who does decide to buy one will not be disappointed.

I'm sorry, I don't understand by what color. Do you mean black or silver? Or coloration of music?

Anyway, everyone needs Darbee. My 105 has one on it already so I don't need the Darbee on the 105D.

I do think that I need the better async USB capabilities of the HA-1 however.

I was a bit surprised at the lack of C.A.S.H. designation too, and particularly given the rather harsh tone of a few comments to the review...I will not be returning my Silver one anytime soon however!

Question as I just got a e-mail on Monday about availability and I would love to buy one of these units, but has anyone compared the Oppo HA-1 to the Emotiva DC-1? I have the DC-1 and it sounds pretty darn good as a pre/amp and Dac, using it with a decent Amp with some good results. It's part of the second system and just curious what the major differences would be. I know the HA-1 as a much better GUI interface and your paying for it.

Please read this DC-1 review vs this HA-1 review. I do not see these comparable for what most would use a HA-1 for.

JohnAV: Thanks I read both of those reviews and both get very high marks, I am looking for a Dac/Pre Amp combo basically and if I get a much better head phone Amp out of it great. The biggest thing for me is the ability to play DSD files with the Oppo, I am a huge fan of theres and have been for some time and own several Blu-Ray players. I bought the DC-1 before the HA-1 came out and was impressed as the guys over at Secrets where. So according to both units and the review they are similar in the aspect of both are a Dacs and a Pre/Amp, so they are comparable in some respects. It looks like the main differences are the GUI interface/DSD and Dacs are more advanced on the HA-1 with a superior head phone Amp on the HA-1 as well. So my question is for a second system I am looking for a good Dac and Pre/Amp that can play high res files and if I get a great Head phone Amp out of it then great, just trying too decide if this is overkill or I just spend the money on upgrading my Oppo Blu-Ray player and get the 103D or 105D.

The real question is how are you likely to store and play those high res files? If you are planning on playing content not from media or attached storage but mostly from a computer then the HA-1 is geared to the type of computer audiophile, while still providing a basic pre-amp if you want to directly drive a stereo amp system.

If you are discussing multi-channel or stereo content using a networked NAS, LAN or Wifi connection, physical media or attached storage, then that is 103D without the analog DAC inputs , or 105D with the analog DAC inputs.

JohnAV: Thanks as I am wanting to go more of the computer Audiophile route, I think the way CD sales are going we will be forced too... I still have an Oppo 93 so debating on going the 105D or 103D route as well as my FP system will benefit as well.

Thanks John,

It is great to see the HA-1 measured and reviewed as a 2-channel preamp/DAC. I think he likes it as much as I do

Hello,

Here a happily owner of the 105D. A friend of mine is looking for a 2-channel preamp/DAC. The HA-1 dac would be an option but it is not a streamer. So what could be a good combination with this Dac.I was thinking of the Auralic Aries or use the Oppo 103d as mediahub and the HA1 for the dac?

What would you suggest any other options I am missing?

I was also interested How it compares to the benchmark dac2 Hgc?

By the way Yesterday I saw the july release of the Magazine Audio from Germany and the HA1 gets 125 points right behind the Auralic Vega but miles ahead of direct competition wich all score in the 110-115 range. The Oppo sits in the pack of 3000-5000 euro Dacs.
