portable 2 channel

I want to have decent sound at the lake house or out behind the barn, maybe one of the porches.

I was thinking maybe a lap top to a pair of powered speakers?

IS there a better idea?

recommendations on speakers and connection explanation would be appreciated.

What you got back home, little sister, to play your fuzzy warbles on? I bet you got little save pitiful, portable picnic players. Come with uncle and hear all proper! Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones. You are invited.

Probably the best way to do this is:

(1) A portable music player or smartphone. If you have a laptop, then it could be very good, but I wouldn't and don't use mine that way because I have a few good portable music players and for just music they are more convenient.
(2) The player may have to have its storage extended with a uSDHC card to hold enough music to please you. Web media access may not be practical or even possible depending on where your vacation home.
(3) You will probably need some kind of external power source for this equipment if you like to listen for music for hours
(4) A pair of powered speakers, depending on how loud and how large of a space to be covered. This can range from better computer speakers to small studio monitors to a fairly capable PA system.

so my sole source becomes the laptop, i just play the music in jrivers and how do i connect directly to the monitors?

i don't need to go through a preamp of any kind? no external dac?

how do i then make the connection between laptop and powered speakers or monitors?

True.

If you want to connect powered speakers to the audio outputs of a laptop, obtain the proper cable which may vary with the speakers you choose.

Here is a common example:

One end looks like this:

The other end looks like this:

The 3.5 mm audio output jack on a laptop is similar to the line level outputs that are common on CD players and preamps. So they will drive the same things. The laptop has a volume control. Usually, an external preamp is unnecessary.

If you want something very portable, the Sansa Clip+ and Clip Zip are great little inexpensive mp3 players that take micro SD cards. I use mine with a JBL Charge bluetooth speaker as my portable jukebox. You could do something similar with powered speakers to make your setup a little more portable.

What is your budget for speakers? And will you have power where you plan to use the speakers, or are you wanting battery powered?

Maybe you could be a little more specific in your expectations...

Are they going to be mounted, or portable, or AC powered, or batteried, for ambience, or parties or what?

I'll be back later...

In that case...

Maybe something like this to your laptop or LMP (little music player)

Can you tell us your budget?

Look into the TDK A33. It gets surprisingly loud and sounds pretty decent for its price. It's also weather resistant.

These are all powered monitors

Smaller (in no particular order within this group)

(1) Behringer B3020A
(2) JBL Pro LSR 305

Larger: (in no particular order within this group)

(3) Behringer B3021A
(4) JBL Pro LSR 308

The Behringers have a mini 1/8" mono input jack, while the JBLs have a 1/4 inch mono phone jack, so they will require different adapter cables. Monoprice is your friend.
