Help me build a new 2.1 system for about $2000k

I'm looking to put together a new 2.1 stereo system for about $2k total. It is for an apartment living room. I don't know the exact dimensions because it's for my brother, but I'm sure it's not too terribly big.

He mostly listens to rock music as well as some trance and other electronic stuff. I understand the budget could be stretched a bit if it would really be a big gain in quality, but I'm not sure how much.

Thanks! Happy holidays!

I'm looking at some Polk RTI A9 speakers ($1500 for a pair), a Sony DN840 AVR ($380), and a Hsu VTF-2 MK4 sub ($500), but that puts me over budget. Any ideas on where I could cut down without losing much quality?

Spend as much on speakers as you can. I'd even consider forgoing a sub for a later purchase to get better speakers. I'd broaden my search from Polk.

If you are sure you are getting a sub, I'd consider a higher quality bookshelf speaker instead of a floor stander. Ascend Acoustics Sierra line comes to mind. There are many others to consider. I'd check the speaker subforum.

Lots of options here. I like the choice you made
On the subwoofer...that's a good one.

I 2nd the recomendation of the Ascend Sierra bookshelf
Speakers. I'm not a big fan of the Polk RTI...you can do better.

I prefer Denon/Marantz and Yamaha over the Sony AVR.
My opinion is that Sony is a step behind the above noted 3.
