Vertical turntables have been around since the 70's, they're just trying to make something that looks different. Remember those vertical CD players in the 90's?
Reading their kickstarter page it seems like these guys are more concerned with the aesthetic of a levitating record player than whatever advantages or disadvantages to the sound it might have. They're supposed to be showing off a working prototype soon, personally I think it's a bunch of nonsense and wouldn't own one myself but i'm interested in seeing the technology work.
Something neat would be a CD player that looks like a turntable with an "arm" that has the laser that flips down on top of it much like a stylus (except it would lock in), as opposed to the disk hidden inside the driver drawer.
It is pretty cool, tho. I'm thinking the whole premise is to reduce rumble through the platter by limiting contact vibrations. If they properly dampened the magnetic fields in the platter, that should eliminate any affect on the stylus. Tough call, given the proximity.

I think their whole premise was explained in your first sentence. It looks really cool. Doesn't matter if actually achieves anything at all in terms of improved audio quality. People will be buying it because it's a conversation piece and fun to own because of it's uniqueness.
