Hey all!
I recently sold an old pair of headphones and have a bit of money I want to invest into my 2 channel system. However, there are two areas I want to improve, but am unsure where I should focus. I want to get a MiniDSP to help smooth out my speakers response in my room, but I also want to get a subwoofer to fill in the deeper bass.
I have a pair of Thiel CS 1.6 speakers powered by an Emotiva XDA-2 > XPA-200 combo. I'm a renter who moves around a lot, so my room isn't ideal; it's a 15x15-ish room (don't think it's square, but it may be) with no treatments. I do want to get treatments, but because I'm moving around a lot, it's not in the cards at the moment.
While the Thiels sound great with movies and video games, I'm much more picky when it comes to music, and I notice peaks and dips when listening to music as well as the lack of sub-60hz response in my system. This bothers me since I'm used to my HD800's, which offer both deep bass and a smooth response, so unfortunately my speakers don't get much use music, the reason I bought them in the first place.
I want to get a MiniDSP to implement some room correction to clean up my system's response. However, I also want to get a subwoofer to add in that low end that I miss when moving to speakers. Unfortunately, I only have about $450-$500.
I was looking at either getting a MiniDSP 2x4, UMIK, and Emotiva BasX S10, or a MiniDSP 2x4 HD, UMIK, and Emotiva BasX S8 (or a BIC F12). Going with the 2x4 HD and S8 would allow me to upgrade to Dirac when I get some more spending money, but going with the 2x4 and the S10 would give me a larger and more powerful subwoofer. I'm wondering if anyone here has any advice for which would be the better choice.
Also, I'm between the BasX subs and the BIC F12. The BIC is nice and cheap for a large driver, but I've heard it's a bit slow sounding and isn't too great for music. I'm not sure how good the Emotivas are, but based on their track record I would guess they'll be pretty decent (plus I get 30 days to see if I like them).
Is Dirac worth getting in the future? Would the larger subwoofer driver make a large difference in my size of a room? According to Emotiva's specs, the S8 goes to 28Hz, and the S10 goes to 27Hz. Doesn't seem like much of a jump for a 50% higher cost. Are there other benefits the S10 would provide other than bass extension?
Thanks!
