How Many of Us are 2 Channel Only?

I'll start. I have 5 working systems set up right now but I have never owned a multi-channel system, anybody else?

2 channel stereo.

Resist sighted audio component evaluations, they're not 20/20. Go blind, you'll see.

I've had several 5.1 setups, but I've been back to a 2.1 system for a few years now, and will not likely ever go back to surround sound...

It is about priorities. My priority is music, despite watching lots of movies, and I don't like the idea of spreading my money so thinly over multiple amps and multiple speakers. I would rather concentrate that on few and better amps, and fewer and better speakers.

So, short of winning the lottery, I'm sticking with 2-channel Stereo -

Sorry about the crappy photo -

Exactly. I'm not sure this will go over very well but I'll say it anyway. HT is about a visual image, sure good sound makes action have more impact but the film media is mostly about the visual image. Your brain can only process so much information and the visual image overwhelms the brain. Two channel is about recorded music and a quality 2 channel rig is best at reproducing recorded music. And a general rule is that two great channels are going to sound better than four good channels. So given limited budgets, 2 channel is king. Your opinion may vary.

I agree if you have a fixed, limited budget, now, and want to go one way or the other. However, if you set up a good 2ch rig, then you can add subs and surrounds as the budget becomes available. This is what I did, and it's taken some years to get to where I want to be.

My system is a bit different to most peoples as I don't use an AVR, and is set up so that for 2ch, the subs are actually the 4th way of the mains and for HT they use the LFE signal; it just requires a couple of relays for switching. The 2ch signal path is short and clean.

Just one two channel only system for me. That's all I'll ever have. I put my $ into a really good two channel system, which also includes a separate headphone amp and headphones. Music is the priority, and I'll take what I get for movies.

I was always a 2 channel person all the way till Pioneer came out with the 1018Ah-k.

Went into multi channel purely out of curiosity... eh don't laugh... I didn't audition anything and simply believed multi channel had to be better than stereo... more speakers, MCACC, bass management... you know, all the novice thinking...
I won't ever forget the disappointment I took to bed with me that evening after all the calibration was done and CD audio from over a digital connection sounded the worst I ever heard.

I spent almost a year moving speakers around and re-calibrating, not giving up, with the belief that it had to be something I was doing wrong... I'm not going to go into HDCP problems with the TV or the HTPC... don't even get me started on that one...

After like a year, Pioneer came out with the VSX-32, I immediately bit hoping for the better, and well, sorry, apart from the support for 3D (the most useless thing ever made IMO) there was barely any difference.
I spent +/- 3 months again trying to see if I could make this sound better, but no way...

Finally got to ditch multi channel and went back to 2 channel.

Three systems in total, one in the main living, one in the master bedroom and the third in the (home) office...

Replaced HTPC with Sony PS4, and switched to watching movies in 2.0.

I spent 12 plus years with the HT mistress only to be constantly left unsatisfied with music. And that was using flagship AVR's and then HT separates too.

Once I sold off all the HT gear replacing it with a good 2 channel integrated amp, I heard the music again! And I have never been happier.

2.0 in the main-floor family room, 2.0 in the upstairs office, 5.4 in the basement HT. Each set-up serves its purpose nicely.

One 2.2 music system and one 5.1 HT system.

I've had a 5.1 system since the mid 80's and it is far superior to 2.1 for movies.

I enjoy my Theater Room just as much as my 2 Channel living room system. Both are great at what they do. I listen to mostly vinyl on my 2 Channel setup. I have equipment in my 2 Channel setup that I originally bought in the 90's,so money wise it wasn't that bad putting my HT together. As far as listening to music though, that's almost an everyday part of my life, with the HT I watch maybe 2 movies over a Wknd when I can, that's about it.

My 2-channel setup is really 4.2 - I have a restored vintage Sansui QRX-7001 4-channel Quadraphonic receiver and a Quadraphonic cartridge, in 2-channel mode 99% of the time unless I'm playing a Quadraphonic album, 4 speakers and (2) 15" subs which used to be in my HT until I built an F-20 sub.

The HT is 7.1

I have a dedicated media room with a 7.4.4 setup for movies and concerts and a 2.2 setup exclusively for vinyls and High Resolution music.

No matter how good a 2 channel setup is, it will never be better than multichannel for movies. You will miss more than half of the effects and gimmicks, specially with the new Atmos and DTS X formats.

I've been multi-channel since 2008 but that's about to change!

It hasn't been practical to set up the centre speaker here so I've been phantom centre (effectively 4.1) for the past couple of years. The lion's share of the films/tv content I own is older, mono/non-surround material and I spend way more time listening to music in any case. So I recently decided to bite the bullet, sell a bunch of kit and buy a nice stereo amp. I've been reasonably happy with the stereo performance of my AV amp (Yamaha DSP Z7) but I'm hoping that the new stereo amp will provide a step up in audio quality although will be less convenient: I've become pretty used to the video switching facility of the AV amp!

I have to say, it is turning out to be a more expensive cost to change than I initially envisaged. In addition to the need for HDMI switch and a DAC, I've decided to opt for a more expensive amp than originally planned (how often does that happen in this glorious hobby?!) and also I've decided to hang onto the sub and third (unused) centre speaker for now with a view to upgrading to nice floor standers in the future, at which point I'll (probably) sell the sub and the three stand-mount speakers.

Thumbs up

Wish I had the room for 2 separate systems. My 2 channel is hooked up to a CJ ET3 SE and the HT pass through goes to my old Krell Showcase. Maybe one movie a week compared to many hours on my turntable. But there is no way I can part w/my Aerial Speakers.
