I am looking for some ideas on masking systems for my HT build.

Here are a few details of my theater room. The room is 11-0 x 17-0 with the screen planned on being on the 11 foot length section. Height to tray ceiling soffits is 93". The LCR speakers will be in-wall. I have not obtained a projector yet and have not made a screen yet. I am just finishing up all of my low voltage wiring with walls still open and just want to make sure there is nothing else I need to change/add before the walls get covered up in a few weeks.

Ideally, I want 2.35, 1.85 for most of my actual movie viewing. 16:9 for TV and Wii and PS3 gaming. And possibly even some 4:3 for some of the kidsy fullscreen movies we have. I am not considering a DIY screen setup with a false wall ... mostly because I want to conserve space in the room and I know my rowdy kids will end up going through the screen somehow. My budget does not allow for a commercial screen or commercial masking system.

I am therefore looking at doing a painted screen directly on the wall or a laminate screen like WilsonArt DW.

What masking options or ideas do people have for that type of setup?

Would it help to build some box columns on the sides and use the tray ceiling soffit above for any solutions?

I have a 2.37:1 screen painted on my wall, similar size room. I ended up creating a simple border using molding (painted flat black) from Home Depot. My masking is simply a set of "shutters" on either end with hinges screwed into the border frame. So with them closed I have 1.78:1, open for 2.37:1. I could have probably created some kind of hinged shutter to also work for 1.33:1, but I decided I watch so little of that AR it wasn't worth it.

Great idea!

I was having a hard time grasping how to even begin to mask the painted wall as a screen (without just painting a masked border around it ....but then I couldn't change my AR) as it is of course flush instead of framed and mounted. The idea of using molding around that area is a good solution.

Any photos to get a better idea of how you did everything?

Here's a couple, hard to see since everything's painted dark gray.

I think the original idea was by Cinemax (Peter) and he called it "gull wing" back in 2005. I too made one back then when I used a solid screen before going AT. I have looked the possibility of making an AT version as I have actually found black "SmX" weave.
