Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if Prismasonic still sells the DIY kits? There's no mention of them on their current pricelist. How much cheaper are/were the DIY versions vs the ready made ones?

Thanks

I can tell you I took advantage of their DIY special for AVSForum members and the installationwas easy. I lucked out that the boards came pre-painted in silver, which I was going to do anyway. I didn't luck out in that the wing nuts they provided were the wrong size for the bolts, and I needed to gogo Home depot to get the right ones to make it work.

The only artifact I've run into os some pincushion on the bottom of the screen only. I'm hoping repositioning the projector further back in the room will solve this. I'll post complete install pics once everything is done.

If you're interested in buying a Prismasonic, contact te rep on here. I'm pretty sure they'll extend the discount to you (guessing) since they extended the date once already.

What happened to the powerbuy thread that contained this info? I can't seem to find it anymore... I, for another, hope this isn't the end of the DIY kits!

Edit: I just noticed the first sticky in the Powerbuys forum, where Alan says that powerbuys will be deleted after one month. Hmm.. I wonder if they'll keep with the DIY option for the long term. If so, it would make sense to add it to their site.

If anyone finds out for sure or gets one, will you let us know? (I don't have an immediate need for one, and am hoping the kits were a long term option)

I remembered the DIY lens post, and remember going to the prismasonic site and seeing it listed there with more info, but alas, that page is gone.

Email them, maybe you'll get lucky.

Make sure to try tilting the lens so that the light path from the PJ passes directly through the center on the front lens. Tilting the lens up/down should show you how that affects pincushion. For me, I found the spot where the pincushion was equal top and bottom, which helped lessen it overall.

Also, I am back a little over 10' from the screen which is a 86" (at 1.78) diag screen at 2.35AR. I get roughly a 1.7 throw ratio, which IMHO, if barely enough as it barely fits within the lens using my epson 550.

I hope they do this on a regular basis, as I don't need it immediately either, but definitely would like it to be an option later, and am thinking that I could really only afford the DIY option anyway.

Thanks for asking, Jerrod.

Yea, Yea I know. But I'm just happy they "might" be bringing it back. I think it was about $650 for the Model H-600D (shipped) on the last one. I might be able to squeeze that into the budget.

ALso something to mention. Shawn from Panamorph responded to an email as well and said they have some DIY UH-50 units left for a very good price. I'm going to search around for info on them. It's a horizontal lense too!

Jerrod,

I did not know Panamorph made any Horizontal stretch lenses. Please let us know what you find out. This might be a great find :)

Interesting, indeed. I haven't considered the panamorph before due to them being VC, but a new HE lens is great news. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will have multiple lenses and put a review here (as Alan did with four popular lenses sometime last year).

There's a fairly lengthy thread about the Panamorph UH-50 here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=635638

It seems the quality wasn't that great - it had a fair amount of chromatic aberration at the sides. Because of this they discontinued the lens. Too bad the quality wasn't quite there since they were selling it for about half the price of the Prismasonic H600M.

Hi Guys,

For dual-prism HE lenses the chromatic aberration is pretty much going to be standard no matter which manufacturer you choose. About the only variable that can apply is the type of prism material involved. We highlighted the chromatic aberration issue with the UH-50 for people even before they bought the product because we didn't want people to expect the performance of our other products in this regard. Overall we only had one return by someone who didn't like the lens but we still felt it was appropriate to let everyone know what they were getting into. The main thing if you are going to use one of these simple HE lenses is to have as high a throw ratio as possible. The higher the ratio, the less you'll notice the CA.

Shawn,

Since you're posting in here, does Panamorph have any other plans for a horizontal lens? If someone was to buy one of the remaining UH-50's and wasn't happy with it, could it still be returned?

Hi Jerrod,

Yes, all UH-50 lenses are sold with a 15 day return policy. But please email me direct with sales types of questions since the forum is restricted to product/technology discussions. Note that you can contact AVS directly for our other products since they are a Panamorph dealer.

We don't have plans for an HE lens at this time. Most people doing CH 2.35 use a fixed lens with scaling to handle the different aspect ratios. In this case you can generally use a VC lens costing less than a third of the highest performaning HE lenses for about the same and in some cases higher performance. I know that some people either insist on a moveable HE lens, or they require an HE lens because of their HT configuration. But to produce an HE lens of the quality of our VC lenses we would have to basically sell a lens comparable to the Isco III. And the market niche for this is so small that it doesn't make sense at this point.

This said, I do believe a low cost HE lens may be successful in the future as soon as electronic CA correction is available inside projectors and/or scalers, but it appears that may be a year or two away.

I have a favor to ask of any future DIY lens owners .

I'm trying to retro-fit pin-stops to my H500 Prismasonic lens , that I purchased last year , but I don't have the exact co-ordinates for their placement . If someone could take some measurements or make a template I could get the placement correct .

Please remember this post when your lens comes in :D

So I will have to jump ahead of the cart and horse to begin gathering all of these pieces, something I try not to do!

What is the best way to be notified of this sale?

I'm curious, but I don't know if my HD72 would work for a CH setup. Right now I'm 11' back and using a 92" screen, but am certainly interested to see if I can get away with CH. Keeping the height the same now, I'd be looking at a 105.75" wide screen and I'm sitting 11.5' back. I imagine that thay might be too big, but I'd hate to have to go smaller as my 16:9 features would suffer for it.

Oh, is the DIY kit the 600m or 1200m? Thanks!

What is their web address again?

Also is there any feeling which model(s) would work with a 1080 DLP projector?

Thanks
