Am I the only person having aspect ratio problems?

I am connected via HDMI to a panasonic TH50PZ80U. 99% of movies display just fine on it. HOWEVER, the special features etc are consistently displayed improperly- they are "squashed" vertically, so that the image is distorted. Whether the video is letterbox, 4:3 or 16:9, the vertical squishing is consistent.

In addition 2 actual movies have been displayed in this improper fashion- Psycho and Rushmore (not the criterion edition, fwiw).

I've tried every video setting on the pioneer, and the only work-around to see undistorted video is to set it to 4:3 letterbox, and then ZOOM in with the TV's controls. This results in undistorted, but grainer/lower resolution video.

Like I said, movie features play perfect 99% of the time, it's only the special features/making of/etc.

Anyone else have this problem?

For explaniation on Code Page, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page

The CP874 is adapted to show Thai chars in file name etc etc.
All firmwares have the ability to show A-Z, English chars, thats why it says English under every different CP!
But for other langauges you have special characters that is needed to have diffrent code pages to show!

I guess that part of the disc is a none anamorphic part!
What are you upscaling to?
If you upscal to 720P or higher test the disc when you upscal to only 480/576

No aspect problems here. On a 27 inch 4:3 tv as well as my 61 inch RPTV wide screen Samsung.

I tried all HDMI resolutions on my Samsung and it was fine for all of them. I can not be certain as to what upscaling/upconverting it may be doing but I saw no display problems.

Thanks H...

This is part of what confused me. "JSompis" I'm not used to seeing that.

Whats under the column Firmware is who moddified it.
JSompis is the one that have moddified 'my' firmware to suite the Thai language. He tweaked a lot of code to have this working, so I let him have credit for it!
There is also a Thai version for the DV-400V

So based on those second 2 links, it appears that some of the video is being sent to my TV in a non-anamorphic format. When the DVD player is set to 16:9 wide mode, it automatically stretches it horizontally to eliminate sidebars, and distorting the picture in the process.

It seems odd that movies would be encoded in this fashion, and it seems odd that the DVD player would handle it as it does.

@Mr. Horse

Set the settings to 16:9 compressed and use a resolution >= 720p over HDMI.

I've tried it @ 16:9 compressed, but only at 1080P. Will reducing it to 720P solve the problem? I will give it a shot.

Since everyone at AVS seems to have an HDMI capable TV but me, I have to ask. I see in the manual that the "squeeze mode" for 4:3 content only works if the output resolution is set to HD. Do I take it then that there is no squeezing of 4:3 material for a 16:9 TV over component (480p)?

I want something that is PAL/NTSC and multi-region compatible, but which also has aspect ratio control. A hack for upscaling over component would be nice, but is not a deal-breaker.

That is correct. Your TV should automatically switch between 16x9 or 4:3 if the disc is flagged correctly and your TV supports ID-1 flag. You can also manually switch the aspect ratio on your TV. It is only needed for HD signals because all HD signals are assumed 16x9 aspect ratio.

I just picked up a new DV-410V, and I have noticed one thing that I'm curious if anyone else has experienced. The player is hooked to the TV using the HDMI connection. About 50% of the time after inserting a DVD once it gets past the loading screen and detects DVD video right before it is going to display and turn on the audio, there is a noticeable pop/click from the speakers. It is not DVD related as one time a DVD may be silent, and the next time it is inserted there will be the pop/click sound.

My cable box also uses HDMI and doesn't have any pop/click sound, but using that connection with the DV-410V doesn't stop the sound. That does lead me to believe that the DVD player is the culprit then. Is this something common with the DV-410V, or am I alone in experiencing this?

I recently got a Pioneer DV-410v, firmware YJB8507B. I took a quicktime, .mov video and converted it to divx avi using Quick Media, put it on a usb drive and inserted it into the player after changing to USB Mode. After insertion the display changes to USB Data and nothing happens. If I go to Home Menu I find Disc Navigator unusable. "This operation can't be performed" I'm hoping it's something to do with my usb setup/filename/s etc.

Could anyone enlighten me as to what I may be doing wrong? I also tried wmv and no dice.

Thanks.

No pop or click on mine using hdmi connection...............yet.

UPDATE:
Found and fixed one problem, the usb drive was formatted NTFS not Fat so now I can see the files but they still won't play, "video size not supported". I'll play with redoing the original .mov until I get it right.

video size can't exceed 640x480. And discs should only be FAT or FAT32.

I recently bought a DV-410 because of the USB capability. I have the following problem with it:

When I initially turn on the dvd player and start USB mode the player starts loading the USB data, so far so good. WHen finished watching I simply turn the player off.

However, whenever I now turn the player back on (in DVD mode or USB Mode) the USB data doesnt get loaded by the player anymore. I also do not get the menu to select a DivX file. So far I have only been able to resolve it by unplugging it frm the power supply, after that it starts loading again.

DOes anybody have any idea why the player does not load the USB data the the second time? Is nobody else experiecing the same problem?

Cheers,

TramLop.

If you have any problems with the player, do a restet:
In off mode, press and hold the STOP button and at the same time you press STANDBY/ON. Buttons on the player it self to be used!

@Vanto
Yes I can make yellow subtitles!

Anyone know how to properly burn the .BIN firmware image file in Mac OS X? The Disc Utility app does not recognize the disk image format. I also tried changing the extension to .ISO, but that didn't help either.

In a MAC it should be as simple as drag and drop and burn!
Just remember that the disc must have the lable name PIONEER.

The *.BIN is the firmware file, it is not an image (ISO).

Thanks for the help. For some reason, I thought it was an ISO image - that explains why Mac OS didn't recognize it as one!

Hi all this is only my second post so be kind.

I have a Pioneer 435 FDE that is about 4 years old & i recently purchased the pioneer DV410 (as i not sure about the longevity of blue ray). I was just wondering about the black settings that you talk about in the firmware update. Does this give similar results that you get when you apply the full range colour option in the standard firmware? is this a good setting as it does seem to give you darker blacks? what would the best settings be in this set up? many thanks in advance.
