What's the best DVD player on the market for under $70 that upconverts movies to 1080 through HDMI (actually both my plasmas are 720 but you never know when I'll move up to 1080)?

It seems the one with the best overall reviews I've seen is the Sony DVP-NS710H/B for $59. Anything better?

Or should I just go ahead and spend $100 and get one that not only upconverts to 1080 but is also a DVD Recorder (such as the Toshiba DR420 and the DKR40)?

BTW: do all Blu-Ray players upconvert standard DVDs to 1080/720?

Thanks for any and all advice.

I'd recommend the Toshiba XDE-600. I love mine - great image quality with the three XDE settings. There's a thread on it here and its been reviewed well by a couple of sites. While there are Blu-Ray players for just about $20 more out there now they can't touch it for SD-DVD upscaling quality. I grabbed a Black Friday Toshiba Blu-Ray for $80, but I'll absolutely keep using the XDE-600 for DVD upscaling.

Actually, Best Buy Outlet on Ebay has its predecessor (XDE-500) for $34.99 with free shipping (new). I've heard its had issues with reliability over the long haul, but for that price who cares? It has the same XDE settings and picture quality.

Thanks...I see that I can get the 600 for $70 with free shipping.

Might take a closer look at that one.

Yamaha DVD-S1800BL is $99.99 at amazon. It's not $70, but it's still a pretty good price.

Over HDMI: yes. At least, I don't recall one that doesn't.
