Two weeks with no posts! Has this thread finally exhausted itself? Is this the end of Rico...er, Laserdisc?

Its hard to say much more about a format that had over 30 years during which much was said about it.

It's more active than the DVD players. If it weren't for the laserdisc fans this section of the forum would be dead.

That's why this thread needs to be stickied!

How has everyone in this thread been? Just an update, I recently found a Pioneer Elite CLD-52 in the box from craigslist, so there is another addition to my little collection. I love the way the manuals look, they just have this quality that is hard to describe.

Also, I recently took delivery of a box of LD's from ebay, and was wondering...is the Criterion CAV edition of Brazil the only way to see the 142 minute cut? I ask because I saw the DVD edition(heavily edited according to the internet) years ago and was wondering if I was ever missing anything huge

Criterion released Brazil on DVD with two different cuts, so I would say no.

A local seller has a Pioneer CLD-D606 with a large collection of discs. Before I make an offer, what would you pay for one?

If it were just the player on good condition, I wouldn't go over $100. You'll have to assess the discs on their own. It wasn't Pioneer's best, but it's a newer player.

Just my opinion.

(See how low he'll go. Maybe he doesn't check ebay, and you can get it for $40!)

I went into a local Savers looking for old AV equipment and came across two laserdisc players. They had them marked with a price of $79 and you get a box of laserdiscs with each. So I picked one up and they let me pick from the two boxes of laserdiscs. They wouldn't let me go through the discs just pick a box and go. The box I picked had 54 laserdiscs in it. After I got home and looked at what discs I got and it was bugging me what discs were in the other box. So I went back down and picked up the other player and box of discs (45). I also just happened to looked over on the wall were the cables and remotes were and found the remote for one of them for $3. So for $170 I picked up 2 players and 99 laserdiscs. The players are Pioneer CLD-3090 and CLD-D701

Not bad at all... now the question is whether any of the discs are worth it!

I still collect LDs, past few weekends I grabbed around 60 for a buck a pop from a local swap meet. It was funny to watch the vinyl collectors thumb through half and stop realizing they weren't LPs. I comb eBay for Japanese discs.

Hey guy's I have a Pioneer 704 that's been dead for a while, but decided to try and mess with it again. Some searches on google leading to missing documents, and other info led me to AVS where I found this thread which is actually current! I've seen this problem mentioned a couple places and I'm going to guess it's the spindle motor, but thought I would get some other opinions. (After posting I went back a couple pages and seems it could be a rubber cushion, if I'm reading that right).

When I put in a Laserdisc the player recognizes it "LD", but when hitting play I hear it spin up for a couple seconds and almost as quickly it stops. It will play CD's fine btw, just not Laserdisc. If it sounds like the spindle motor is it something I can replace? I don't know who to contact in town for repairs, and as *bad* as it sounds I would really like to watch Cool as Ice again not to mention some of my other 40 discs.

^Although I too, have a 704 but am no repair expert. I'll give you my best guess. LD's require a clamp to hold and spin the disk. It sounds like yours is slipping, or perhaps not engaging at all. (just a guess). Good luck!

Yeah, cleaning the disc clamp with rubbing alcohol (but not the kind with additives, the clear 95% isopropyl is best) may help you a great deal.

Thanks for the info guys. I checked out the instructions, but now have a couple questions. Where can I get the chamois sticks mentioned, or a suitable replacement locally? The rubbing alcohol (95%) is also proving hard to come by or I'm not checking the right stores. I looked at Wal-Mart, and Walgreens but could only find 70% Isopropyl Alcohol.

That'll work fine. If you can't find the chamois sticks, just buy a cheap imitation chamois where they sell auto stuff, cut it into little pieces and fasten to a stick of your choice.

So my cleaning instructions are still around. If this does not help then the other common problem is a capacitor on the motherboard shorting, blowing a micro fuse on the motherboard and LD playback will not work. CD playback does work as this failure only affects LD playback.

If you need assistance fixing the player contact me at kbahr@comcast.net

A few years ago I bought a quart of 98% isopropyl at Fry Electronics
IIRC it was less than $10 and is labeled USP grade.
Before that I purchased at local pharmacies also USP but more expensive.

Another product is used to clean rosin from circuit boards which was available at Radio Shack and Fry's as well . I use this to clean the CPU and heat-sink before aplying thermal compound. Careful, this is a strong solvent.

Avoid rubbing alcohol, it contains Lanolin, don't wand grease/oil on you gear do you.

Hey everyone, my LD player just died. What is considered the best LD player out there if you were going to look for 2 or 3 that over time came to be accepted as being the best?

Thanks!

What are you looking for? CLD-D704 would be the best bang for the buck. If you want a high end machine with low noise then the CLD-97 for two sided playback and LD-S2 for single sided.

Send me a PM and I can discuss further.

Hi, All -

I picked up a Yamaha CDV-1700 with remote a month or so ago. I have already collected about 40 or so LDs. I have learned a ton from this forum, especially about why the composite connections smokes the S-Video connection on my Samsung DLP. Amazing.

So, I noticed that I getting some wavy textures on some of the discs during playback. Also, the player seems to take a few minutes to start playing a movie and when it does, it skips to a minute or so into the playback. If I clean the discs, it seems to play better, but still has slow start up. Also, it can not track CDs at all. It will skip around and maybe play sporadic bits towards the end of the album.

I have cleaned the lens, as instructed. Is there anything else I can try or should I just go for another player?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Derek

Did you clean the lens, or clean the spindle? If the spindle isn't gripping the disc firmly, it will spin loosely and the player may take a long time to track it (if at all).

Hi, Josh

Just the lens. Any advice on cleaning the spindle? I have some good cleaning compounds that I use on my reel to reel deck. Thanks!
