I'm trying to help someone get a their dvd player to work correctly. He has a samsung 720p tv and a Standard Pioneer dvd player from 2004. He has it hooked up from the dvd player to the tv via red, green, and blue rca's. He is getting sound and picture just fine. But the problem is the picture is black and white. His vcr gives sound and color just fine. Advice?

Have him check the DVD setup. Video output should be selected to be component.

Or he could just try composite cables. He's not going to HD out of a standard DVD player anyway so no need to use component.

It really sounds as if he's got the blue and green cables switched on one or both ends

Then he wouldn't get an image at all.
Sounds like he has component plugged into a composite input...there was no mention of audio cables, yet he is getting sound.
