I have a problem the the 981 HD with its RCA digital out when playing DVDs - it motorboats in synch with the platter motor.
Oddly the audio via external DAC is OK with CDs but not with DVD (Although the video is fine).
Audio out of the L/R analog (using the internal DAC) is fine for DVD audio, but not using an external DAC.
We have not tried it with Toslink but suspect that is the same.
I contacted OPPO for a service manual or circuit diagram but they refused, although offered to help if we posed questions. So far they are not responding.
Any suggestions or ideas where I might find an answer on the net would be appreciated.
It doesn't have much activity these days, but try posting in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/t/760726/oppo-digital-dv-981hd-faq-brain-dump
What external DAC are you using? Not all DACs can handle all digital formats, and the digital audio on a DVD is typically a different format from the digital audio on a CD.
DVD uses Dolby AC3 or DTS digital audio. This is a compressed 5.1stream and cannot be input to a basic audio DAC. When you play a CD in a DVD player, it outputs standard 2 channel PCM which any DAC can use.
