A friend of mine is looking into getting a mc-sacd player.
He already owns a dvd-a player, and a Theta transport (I think it's the Carmen), so he doesn't really need cd, dvd-v, or dvd-a playback capabilities - all he's interested in is audio quality.
(Naturally, if there's a universal player in this price that beats all other sacd players, he won't refuse it ;) )

Thanks, :)

Sony SCD-222ES 5-disc, audio only player. I've yet to see a uni player that competes with Sony's audio-only players. I hope that changes but for now that's the way it is. Best wishes!

I have returned my 963sa because of video failure.

The SACD playback was outstanding through a Krell TAS amp into B&W 804s.

Hope this helps.

I have both the Sony SCD-222ES & the Sony DVP-NS900V
I would say that the 900 is right with the 222 at times I think it maybe
better. If that $500 is flexible you may find a 555ES for around $500-$550 at audiogon.
Sony has a few new mega players coming out later this year.
A 400 disc unit with a price of $400.
Only time will tell as to the SACD quality.

I just bought a 222ES from oade.com for $325 last week. I haven't hooked it up, but I did power it up. MAN, it's pretty "clunky" sounding! Are they all like this? It makes a clunk sound when it searches each slot for a disc.

Could you please describe, what kind of video failure you met on 963SA?
Thanx a lot!

Patrick,
Yes, they ain't no 70 or 80 ES CD changer.
The random disc shuffle play is worthless, the carousel noise and the time it takes to scan each disc prior to the track playing sucks.
But the 222 still sounds very nice.
The 555 has this same sound, those that I auditioned did.

Jerry, I don't see what's wrong with the shuffle play. I've used it alot on my 555ES. Unless, you're just complaining about the speed...perhaps?

Patrick, the 222 & 555 are slow but that's to be expected given disc identification. I haven't had alot of changers but the 555 is the loudest I've had, no contest. I completely forgive the machine once the music starts though! Me like-y!:)

The video failure was described in one of the 963 threads in this forum. Briefly, the component output had an extreme color push on my unit. I had to turn down the color settings way too much. I concluded that it was a bad unit & returned it.

I have the SCD-C222ES and I love it. Give it some time to break in and even CD on it sounds awesome. I am quite impressed with SACD, compared to DVD-A there is no contest. SACD has a much larger soundfield and is much warmer to me

Rachael,
Yes the speed in the multi disc shuffle mode kills me,
All the dead silence between tracks.
I have had my 222 now since Dec 01, so i have learned to hate
that mode, In all I love the 222 as a SACD head.
I will say the disc identification of the NS900V is faster.
I have had many Sony ES CD changers, i still have a CDP-CA80ES
and there is no comparison, you can't even hear that carousel.
