Question Oppo DVD Players with HDCD Decoding

Which Oppo DVD player models have internal HDCD decoding?

- About the 970?

There is no info in the 970 and 971 threads.
Can someone confirm?

OPPO BDP-93 (Blu-ray Player)
OPPO BDP-95 (Blu-ray Player)
OPPO BDP-103/D (Blu-ray Player)
OPPO BDP-105/D (Blu-ray Player)

Oppo 970 (viewed from the top):

It has the [HDCD] logo...meaning it decodes HDCD encoded CDs.

Question

Oppo 971 (top) and Oppo 981 (bottom):

No [HDCD] logo on neither one. That would bring me to the conclusion that neither player can decode HDCDs. Can someone confirm?
______

These two models, in particular the 971, ...very confusing as to find out if they can decode HDCD encoded CDs or not.
I found only one person who said that the 971 can decode HDCDs...only one.
And I found more people mentioning HDCD with the 981.

I know that those two players support HDCD discs (all players in the world since 1982 can play HDCDs), but the question is not about if they can play them but if they can decode them?

This is it; only those two Oppo DVD player models I have no clue if they can decode or not HDCD encoded CDs.
______

• Try to decipher (981 review): http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/oppo_dv981hd.htm
There is no HDCD logo anywhere on the player, and there is none either in the OSD, and no HDCD light.
It's the same with the 971.

It took me a while but I finally found the answers (if this is good for the 971 it is also good for the 981).
Oppo and HDCD question

"The OPDV971H fully supports HDCD. When a HDCD track or HDCD disc is
played, the on screen display (OSD) will show "HDCD" briefly. During
the entire track, the front panel display will show the "HDCD" icon.
When a standard CD track is played, the OSD will show "CD" briefly and
the front panel display will show the "CD" icon.

HDCD decoding is done by the OPDV971H if analog audio output is used.
When digital audio output is in use, it is the responsibility of the AV
receiver to decode the HDCD digital stream.

"OK. I popped in an HDCD cd.
The Oppo does display HDCD on the screen for a second and there is a HDCD indicator on the front panel of the dvd player."
______

The manuals for both the 971 and 981 have no indication about the HDCD light; so the best way to find out is to play a HDCD encoded CD.
Then the HDCD logo/letters will briefly appear illuminated for a second or two, then a small HDCD light indicator.
But there was no such indication in their manuals, that I could find. With the 970, 980 and 983 ... no problemo ...their manuals clearly show the HDCD logo in the front panel display.

That's it folks, I got my answers, but it took me a while. Oppo is good, very good to offer HDCD decoding in all their DVD players, and in all their Blu-ray players too.
Only in their first generation UHD BR player that they removed the HDCD decoding. Bummer!

My 981 shows HDCD on OSD when disc loads, but only has a CD light on front display. I am connected via analog(as well as HDMI).
I don't think the 981 has an HDCD light on front display.

Alright, good to know (only from the OSD for few seconds). It has no [HDCD] light, only the CD indicator light.

And you are right; page 5 of the manual → https://www.oppodigital.com/support/...1hd_manual.pdf

* By the way, you get the HDCD decoding only from the analog RCA out connections.
From the digital out connections (including HDMI) your need a DAC (or receiver, or pre/pro) with its own HDCD decoder, or you won't get HDCD's benefits.

Yep, the HDCD decoding is the only reason I have analogs connected to that player.

No sound through HDMI on Oppo 981

Have an old Oppo 981 DVD player hooked up to my Denon X2300. Was getting nothing through the HDMI at first but finally realized it was a handshake issue, where the Oppo had to be powered on last to connect through the receiver. But now I get picture but no sound.

I've set it per the manual to the configuration to output through the HDMI (this was their first player I believe that offered an HDMI output). I also messed around with all the permutations of output formats the Oppo offers, but can't get any sound, no matter how I set it. Even going straight into the TV produces no sound.

Any ideas?

There are +/- volume controls on the remote. Make sure it is not set to 0. Volume control does not affect HDMI output, with the exception that 0 = mute.

There is also a MUTE button; make sure that is not pressed.

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately it was already set at 20 on the volume and Mute was not selected. Still no sound.

Any other ideas?

Has it never produced audio for you, or is this a new development?

I forget the Setup options on that player: is there an HDMI Audio OFF setting? Or a way to switch between LPCM and Bitstream?

It formerly produced audio, but I haven't used in in a few years.

UPDATE: Just remembered that I wasn't sure if I'd hook it directly tot he TV once I realized it had the handshake issue. Turns out, running straight to the TV DOES produce audio. So it's got to be an issue with the Denon X2300W. I'll post on there for help too.

Thanks again for the assistance!
