I noticed the dithering on the G Wega with a Panasonic DVD player. It disappeared when the display was set-up properly with Avia. You are seeing things that the display wouldn't normally show you if set up properly.

Out of curiousity are you running it (the TV) with the settings from the factory?

The Avia disc is worth every penny.

Dean

I'm using the 5900 on a 60" GWIII that's been tweaked to the 9s.(lets talk color decoder, grayscale, enhancements, etc) Making adjustment to 3DNR and MQNR for all intents and purposes has corrected the dithering/noise that I was seeing. For now I'm distracted with thinking how good the picture looks and sounds to stay focused on the actual program.

What's interesting is back in February when I was auditioning a Denon 2900 on a GWIII, it had this same effect. Problem is the 2900 doesn't have the adjustments that the 5900 does. Anyway, the 2900 I bought didn't have this problem on my GWIII. Sounds like the firmware may have been different between the dealer's demo unit and the one that I actually bought or maybe it was broken.

Although I really liked the 2900, I'm glad that I upgraded to the 5900.

I just got my 3800 back for the shop. My invoice says that they replaced the laser and fixed the Y/C delay. Does anyone know if the Digital Video Essentials calibration disc has a Y/C delay test?

Avia has a Y/C delay test, I don't think DVE does.

eCost just made DVD-5900's available again at what seems to be a nice price.

Has anyone purchased a 5900 from them and how was the experiance?

I picked up one today to go with my Yamaha RX-Z1 and ScreenPlay 7200 and from what I have read it should play nicely with those components but I did purchase a two year extended warranty to go with it. I have had bad experiances with remanufactured products but I thought that I would give it one last try.

I understand the refurbish units are to be as good as new and can be returned in 90 days if defective. You can also buy a extended warranty for 2 years on the 5900 for 100 dollars. What experience has anyone had with ecost or refurbish items from them. Thanks Greg

Gregg,

I have no personal experience with refurbished units however I find it quite annoying that these units only come with a ninety day manufacturer's warranty instead of the original 1 year. If these are refurbished by Denon why don't they stand buy the original 1 year warranty. I decided to buy from Crutchfield who is an authorized dealer. They offered me a price below MSRP but I went with the cheaper scratch and dent option that gave me the original 1 year warranty and 30 day for any reason return which included return shipping label. I ended up with a cosmetically perfect unit however the DVI output was not compatible with my projector due to the manufacture date. Crutchfield is sending me a new 5900 that will work and I couldn't be happier.

Anyone care to explain? Is this the firmware/inactive DVI issue or is there another change related to the DVI output?

This is not the inactive DVI issue, and it can't be fixed with the current firmware. Denon told me it is a known incompatibility problem with the Sanyo PLV-Z2 LCD projector that was fixed in all 5900 units made in 2004. All other units will need to be sent in to Denon service if you want to use them with the Z2. If your buying a new 5900 to use with the Z2 get one with a serial # starting with 4.

Steve - I don't know if you worked some kind of deal with Crutchfield or not, but their website explicitly states that Scratch and Dent merchandise does NOT carry the manufacturers warranty:

"Scratch and Dent Guarantee: You can return any item for any reason within the first 30 days. We'll gladly give you a refund for the full amount of the merchandise. We'll even pay for the return shipping! And while Scratch and Dent products cannot include a Manufacturer's Warranty, Crutchfield provides its own warranty with the same benefits and terms as the manufacturer's warranty. (Note: Scratch and Dent items may lack the paperwork needed to redeem manufacturer rebates and special offers.)"

Just a heads-up.

Ecost is selling refurbish 5900 denon dvd players at basically 50% off. Its a great price if the unit is truly as good as new. Then for another 50 or 100 dollars you get a one or two year extra warranty. My concern would be who fixes it, and where do I take it or send it for repair, and will the dvi function with a new projector I plan on purchaseing in September. Open for any feedback. Thanks Greg

They told me the unit came with the original 1 year warranty. I translated that to be the manufacturers warranty. I guess I'll call and see.

Thanks.

I bought a scratch and dent DVD-3800 through Crutchfield, and it had the infamous freeze-up problem. I called Crutchfield and they had me send it to Denon's Pine Brook, NJ service center. Not only did I get the laser replaced, but I had them fix the Y/C delay as well, and all I had to pay was the cost of shipping my unit to Denon. It may not be the manufacturer's warranty, but as long as Denon is doing the repair work, I am happy.

Now all I have to do is get a copy of Avia so I can see how well they fixed the delay.

Shoot. That might be too good to pass up...

If it's not worth waiting until the last minute to do, then it's not worth doing.

I just ordered a 5900 from Crutchfield (that 10% off deal is great - I got a 300 disc CD changer for free!). :) Ordered it with Sat Delivery so tomorrow I will get behind my system to install my HD TiVos and my new DVD player. Can't wait. :D :D :D Thanks to all for your input on this wonderful machine.
