Is the zenith what I am looking for?

I read some of the faq, but I thought someone who owns it could help me out. Thanks.

Hey, I thought I saw you post over at the Panasonic S97 thread. If I remember correctly, you have the same TV as I do, the HLP5063?

1) The 318 actually looks quite terrible at 720p. The ONLY output to use with this player, whether component or DVI is 1080i.

2) The DVD player can be made region free, but you need to create a CD to do so. The hack is a listed over at videohelp.com and probably even in this thread somewhere.

3) Don't have the receiver so, can't comment on that.

4) Unfortunately, the macroblocking is visible on both component and DVI, maybe a little worse than the S97. I think the problem is with the Faroudja chip.

5) It passes blacker than black on both DVI and component.

6) No white crush on component, but it's there on the DVI with certain firmware. Sounds like you're going to use component, so not a problem.

If you are using 1080i over component, you just need to make sure to get one of the firmwares that support upconversion over component.

Keep us posted if you decided to get the 318. Since you have the same TV as I (I think) I'd like to hear how it works out for you. I'm pretty happy with mine, except for the macroblocking, especially for the price. It wasn't the macroblocking on the S97 that turned me off, but I just couldn't get it to look as good on my TV as the 318.

I've really enjoyed my 318, but I've had one problem.

On bright flashes in a movie, I'll often lose my picture altogether for a few moments.

For context, I've got it hooked up to an Infocus 7200.

Any thoughts on why this is?

Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.

Chairmantao--so you're running the 318 upconverting to 1080i out over component to your Sammy HLP5063--which as everyone knows has a native resolution of 720p--and to your eyes that was better than 318 720p DVI, 318 720p component, 318 1080i DVI w/ new firmware and anything you could get via the S97 hooked up to your 5063?

Did you use something like DVE to help calibrate your 5063-or just to help quantify the blacker than black setting--and would you be willing to share something more in-depth in terms of settings, picture mode, tweaks and how you adjusted for the "1080i DVB318 via component to 5063" path? I've been fine tuning with DVE, and making comparisons against, this same connection for a couple of weeks, though to a Sammy 4663. Anyone else going this way or another way with the 318 and xx63 series?

I watch a lot of dvds from different regions and burn to different media formats with an external LaCie NEC drive. As has been mentioned by many others, the 318 plays everything I throw at it, the region-free hack and both firmwares work, with a Mac and OS 10.3 it's foolproof to download these, drag and drop as is onto discs, allowing you to change back and forth if needed down the road, if you upgrade later or give this player to someone else. (Off-topic, but the last of the "relatively" inexpensive upscaling players I plan to test head to head against the 318 & 4663 is the new Sony, to try to see if there's anything to the green push/green depression potential synergy firsthand. I fear I may have to keep my older Toshiba 4900 region free player if the Sony 975-Sammy 4663 pairing proves better than the 318-4663 pairing, which I would be willing to do. The 4900 was a region-free champ. I don't believe there is a region-free hack yet for the 975.)

RockStrongo--did I read you're getting the best results to your Sammy DLP with the Panny S97 via 480p component out?

I tried to hook up my second DVB-318 to a Mit 55413 last night using DVI and ran into the same 'frozen' problem others have described.

What I want to know is if anybody successfully connected this player to a mit rptv using DVI without constantly performing the unplugging trick.

This also happened to me on my 65413.

I like to watch video and listen to audio.

chefklc,

One would think that it would be better to output 720p to the HLP since it's 720p native. BUT, running 480p or 720p over EITHER component or DVI produces very noticable artifacts. You can tell on the Zenith's titlescreen before you even insert a DVD. If you look at the text, you can see artifacts up and down the letters. Well at least I saw it and so did the guy who pointed them out to me.

So, I've found that running 1080i over DVI to my HLP gives me the best picture quality. It looks sharper and brighter than 1080i over component. I am currently using the firmware that came with the Dec 03 build. I haven't noticed the white crush enough to be bothered by it, even using DVE, so I've decided to put off updating the firmware. If it ever becomes apparent to me, I'll do it.

As for the S97, my problem with it was macroblocking worse than the 318. I tested it using 720p and 1080i over HDMI.

I used DVE to calibrate my settings. As for what my settings are, I'd be happy to share them, but it will have to wait until sometime next week before I get a chance to.

You confirmed what I'd observed as well--I think 318 1080i over DVI to the xx63 is better than 318 1080i over component to the xx63. Every now and then there's an audio sync issue, I suspect because of the extra processing delay, but that doesn't happen too often. Problem for me is I have an LG 3410A (with a JVC DVHS via firewire) performing amazingly well with HD through my Sammy DVI, so I'm still going component with the dvd and hoping I happen upon a better sub-$300 hdmi alternative. Next week is fine, if we're here we're in it for the long haul.

I've not yet had time to try the 318 via DVI-to-HDMI of the 4663. Maybe this weekend. Thank you again.

I just received my DVB318 today from a place up in Rochester NY savinglots.com for $172/$192 with shipping. I first tried to switch to 1080 with the firmware that came with it (startup icon was Zenith) but the picture was distorted so I put in the LG firmware that was posted in this thread, the startup icon is now LG, and I'm getting the same results. Is there something else I need to do to make this work?

My TV supports 480i/480p/1080i

Thanks in advanced

you'll probably have to be more specific--for starters, are the LG/Zenith screens themselves distorted or only when you try to play a dvd? are you hooked up via component or dvi? which model tv are you hooked up to? did you try playing a dvd right out of the box before attempting to upconvert or change firmware?

Shaneotool,

Thanks for the response. I wonder if this is a mit 55413/65413 problem or the DVB318 has a problem, or both.

I was trying to compare a Denon 2800 MKII 's 480p component feed to the Zenith's 1080i and really could not find a big difference in the mit 55413.

Have tried a pile of titles and the conclusion is this. Non anamorphic discs haven't worked. Anamorphic or Enhanced for widescreen discs all work. Some earlier Paramount discs were in Widescreen but not anamorphic or enhanced ie. Star Trek. Collector editions have been fixed to allow upconverting.

I love my dvb-318, and have it playing on a Hitachi 51s715 CRT RPTV. The only problem is that I have a coulple of white "blobs" on the top center of the screen. They are pretty apparatent during dark scenes, and occur both during 16:9 films (in dark scenes) and constantly in 2.35:1 films (but are only really apparent during dark scenes).

It seems like there is a bit of "white" being displayed at the top of the picture which causes a sort of white "bleeding" to occur in two or three spots at the top center of the tv, extending about 1-2 inches downward.

I do not have a problem with digital cable at all, so I think it is the fault of the dvb-318. Is there any way to adjust the verticle centering of the dvb-318. I think if i could move it up a 1/4 inch or so it would take care of the problem. I don't want to mess with my tv's veritcal centereing, since it seems fine for all tv and my xbox.

Also, I have noticed this problem when using two separate component inputs, supporting my idea that it is not my tv's fault.

any suggestions?

I have this exact same problem with my Hitachi 51f510 and the dvb318.

Are there any other fixes other than unplugging the unit for a while? Nothing seems to work for me and the "white blobs" at the top of the screen are becoming more annoying, especially in dark scenes.

I use the player over component. Sadly I can't even try it over DVI since the Hitachi TV has an HDMI input and no matter what I do the dvb318 locks up when hooked up to it.

I just bought this and DVI-HDMI on my Hitachi 50VX915 was working fine out of the box. But there was a serious white crush problem so I decided to change the firmware.

- Firmware to fix the white crush issue caused HDCP compatibility issues. Now I get the infamous HELLO freeze. Plugging in the DVI cable after playing a dvd does not work.

So I decided to downgrade the firmware back to the one that alllows upconversion via component.

- As you may have guessed, this DID NOT fix the HDCP compatibility. I still get the HELLO freeze when trying to use DVI now.

Conclusion: The latest factory firmware shipping with some of these models resolves HDCP compatibility issues at the cost of white crush issues.

Does anyone know where I can get the latest factory firmware?!?!

Does anyone know if I can hook this dvd player up to my Analog Toshiba 27af42 through the component hookups? I tried and it did not work and I thought maybe there was a option to turn off something so it would work. Thanks if anyone knows.

I don't think that set can handle 480p. You need to set the 318 output for 480i via component.

Just hooked up my new DVB318 to my Mits 55807. Build date was 10/04, so I immediately fed it a CD-R with the old firmware .bin file. 1-2-3, done.

Popped in a DVD, pressed the upconversion button twice, and finally I know what all the commotion is about! Love the PQ!

Player seems well-behaved - no anomalies yet. Next up, playing with my Avia and DVE discs. I'll finally get to tighten up the HD side of the Mits' settings!

Curious, if the most recent firmware disables up-conversion on the Component analog output why does there website suggest differently? Click the Additional Information link to the right, it says Component Video out, 1 (1080i).

When will D* stop pushing HD-Lite while charging us for full HD? Digital input on a CRT is a reality, not a possibility.

i live west of Atlanta in Carrollton. i have 2, one plugged to my 60" Sony XBR950 via DVI and my other plugged up to a 30" JVC 16:9 tube via component.

a buddy of mine has 2 (after seeing mine ;-) ), one plugged into a 70" Sony XBR950 and the other plugged to a 50" Nakamichi Plasma. he lives in Kennesaw off Chastain.

if your interested in seeing either, PM me.

OK, mine just arrived(Oct 04) and I did a little playin with it. I put in "Cellar" and it up converted it just fine both 720p and 1080i. I remembered that players with the new firmware won't play "Star Wars" so I popped it in and Wa La only plays in 480p.

So it looks like it will up convert non-copy right DVD's and the web site is right.

I need to know if I can download the old firmware using a Mac?

Thanx Ddog!!

I have the old firmware, I think it is Feb. build. I am having problems viewing DVD+R disks. I am using Ritek disks and they play fine on other DVD players I have. The disks play fine always until about the end or 3/4s of the way in the movie, then skipping and audio cutout occurs.

Anyone else have issues with playing DVD+R discs on the Zenith player?

It's more the media ... as in the particular batch that you have. I have plenty of +R media that plays just fine on the LG/zenith.

Sometimes the burn speed of the DVD also affects the playback. discs burned at 2.4X sometimes play more reliably than those at 4X or 8X ...

The Zenith seems to be more sensitive to this ... as other players like pioneer and Sony units play right through where the Zenith would stutter ...

Well, the 318 - oct build - came in via UPS, firmware flashed easily _grin_

Set it up with Video Essentials (pre-digital version)

If there's a green depression, I can't tell it. Yellow and green seemed to set fine with the setup disc. If it's doing it - I don't wanna know _big grin_

This thing is killer for $160 including freight.
