At least according to their customer service people it will be in stores within the next 2 weeks! This is great news as I have been waiting to see what this player can do for some time now. I believe it will be the first HDMI DVD player on the market.

Does anyone know if it will definitely have the Faroujda chip in it? I'm guessing it will but you never know. Sometimes they don't want to advertise that sort of thing.

Either way i'm thinking this will be the perfect DVD player to compliment my new Panny plasma. :D

I hope you're right on the timing... but latest word was September at the earliest.

Catalogs mention Faroujda, but rumours abound that it does not actually have it... so conflicting info for sure.

As for being the first with HDMI, not even close. Pioneer and Arcam (and maybe others I'm forgetting at the moment) have had HDMI offerings for a while now.

Will this Panny be better with KF50WE610 than Zenith DVB318? I am shopping for a good DVD player to go with my 50" monster. I am also looking for suggestions regarding cabling.

Thanks,

Hopefully the rumor is true, but the last word was Sept for DVD-S97 and Oct for SA-XR70.

SA-XR70

What is that? I haven't heard of that one yet.

Also, keep in mind that I got this info directly from the customer service rep. I'd be suprised if she was totally wrong about something like that. You would think they'd get the latest dates for the upcoming products.

The Panasonic SA-XR70 is the companion HDMI-capable receiver.

Keep in mind that if worded as "by september" that could mean anytime between today and September. ;) So, the June 21st date I was given could still hold true.

I have no info on this one except that it ain't the first HDMI DVD player on the market. The Arcam DV79 has it now.

I spoke to the product manager a week ago. The info provided by the call center is wrong.

The S97 isn't coming until September.

Looks good, I wonder if there will be a UK model with PAL progressive support.

It looks like members are getting confused of the release dates.

For US it's June
For Canada, it's September

Hey, I've got a great idea, in addition to higher prices, lets really make Canadians angry by making them some of the last people on the planet to get the latest gear! ... :(

...and as always...Yamaha, or some other company, provided this player shines as well as we hope, please take this thing and make a 5 disc carousel out of it

It isn't supposed to. Once the players become available we will know for sure. As specified, the upconversion to 720p/1080i is reserved for the HDMI-HDCP connection.

As far as I heard S97 is not coming to Europe at all.

Sango, is this a hard fact or your best guess? Who have you spoken to/what have you read regarding these release dates?

Panny's S97 is my last, best shot at a reasonably-priced upconverting player before moving on to the likes of the Pioneer or the upcoming Denon lineup.

Thirdkind would seem to have the inside scoop. I'm going to place my bet on September. If Panasonic surprises us, fine, otherwise I'm going to be patient. Patient. PATIENT. *PATIENT* :D

IIRC, doesn't the Panasonic SA-XR70 have only 1 HDMI input? Now that I have the HD TiVo that won't cut it if I get a DVD player with HDMI.

Well, shifting street dates are nothing new. The Samsung players were supposed to come out in Q3; the 841 is out already. The Bravo D2 was supposed to come out in February; it came out in late May. The D3 was supposed to come out in April, I think; instead, it's indefinitely delayed. The Phillips upconverting player was supposed to come out in February; where is it? Being teased is one way to keep all of us on the hook, and it's more than Panasonic who's guilty.

But I think I would rather have Panasonic annouce an April date, then postpone until June or September if it meant that most or all of a player's bugs were being fixed. Wouldn't it have been better if Toshiba had not stuck to their March release date and waited to put out a decent product?

I guess we are all hoping for a player with the de-interlacing, and basic performance characteristics of the RP82, but with the addition of an upconverting DVI interface. What are the chances that the S-97 fills that bill once it's released? Will Secrets test it as soon as it's out? And finally is it in fact faroudja based or does it use a panasonic grown custom chipset?

Will definately look forward to see what this unit really have. I have been in contact with Video Only(a friend of mine works there) on a weekly basis to find out when it's comming so I can get the first grabs on the first one that comes in. The store is also interested in finding out as well.

The Faroudja question has been asked a lot of times. I think the leaning now (based upon some catalog picture evidence and other) is that the Faroudja chip is present. We'll know for sure when the player is released and some brave soul opens up the box.

Thirdkind,

If the player was originally announced with an April release date, could your contact at Panasonic shed some light as to why it's being delayed some five months (assuming September is the date that sticks)? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks!

Why doesn't Panasonic use the "DCDI" logo on their players useing "DCDI"!

Is Faroudja charging a "Logo" fee?

Reguardless.......As long as "DCDI" is inside.....This will be my next player.

Maybe Panasonic perfers to utilize its own logos and not that of other maufacturers. Or, perhaps, they feel that DCDi does not have enough recognizability to justify putting it on the equipment (whereas "Dolby" and "DTS" might, in their opinion)

I'm sure this one will have the DCDi logo on it since we're listing it as a feature in the print materials along with the logo.

There is likely an extra fee to advertise the use of DCDi, which is why we've used it previously without bragging about it. Our competitors openly tout DCDi, so we probably decided it was worth it to pony up the licensing fee and get the logo on the case.

As for why it was delayed, I have no idea. Could be because it originally wasn't going to use DCDi (which is what I was told), but then the factory changed their minds. Who knows.
