Having read the threads debating 3910, 2910, and the 2900, I'm still having trouble picking the player to go with my new TV.

Locally, the 2910 (new) is about $75Cdn less than the 2900 (demo). The 3910 (new) is about $600Cdn more than the 2910.

From my reading, it seems the 2900 will be best bang for the buck even for a demo unit; esp. if I use the analog ext. in for sound to my AVR, a 3803.

Is the digital upconversion in the 3910 or 2910 worthwhile? Has anyone with either of these players compared the digital outputs vs. component?

Suggestions would be welcome.

Simon

In my tests with the now discontinued Denon 5900, I preferred the movie images I got with the DVI ouput over what I got with the Component output. The Avia test screens looked better to me as well. But there are lots of people who are quite happy with that unit's Component outputs so it's a matter of taste. This is likely to be true for the other dual output players as well. Keep in mind that what you will see is a combination of what the player does differently AND what your display does differently when you switch connections.

For the new 3910, be sure to check Kris's writeup (Secrets web site) on how different outputs and different resolution selections affected macroblocking. Just in case macroblocking is visible with this player on your display, that may affect your choice of how to hook it up.

For video, the 2910 and 3910 are pretty equivalent, and better (via HDMI or DVI) than the 2900 (via component). For audio, if you use the player's DACs, the 2910 is the worst of the 3.

Thanks Bob & BilllP,

Those were pretty much the same conclusions that I had arrived at.

May just get the 2900 as the best choice and not worry about the extra little bit of quality improvement with the newer players, but get better audio. Or, I could future-proof by spending the extra $600+tax on the 3910...

Not sure if it's worth losing more hair?:D

Just finished reading one of the threads regarding DVD player for Sony. It was pointed out that the GWIII internal scalar/deinterlacer may do an adequate job so an upconverting player may not show much benefit.

Just wondering if anyone knows if this applies to the HD-ila's.
