I myself would rather send a digital bitstream to my receiver than the analog 5.1.... I guess it's a question of would you rather have your receiver or your DVD player decoding the digital signal.

The manual actually states that with the player set to AUTO for the video signal, it outputs the highest resolution that your TV will accept. I assume this means that it will output 1080i to any set which accepts it - probably all HDTVs.
This is true. In Auto mode the DVD player sends 1080i to my Samsung HLP and not the native resolution of 720p. I had to manually select 720p. I have not determined which resolution looks better yet, but it would seem that since the Samsung would have to convert the 1080i and not have to covert the 720p signal that the 720p signal would be better.

juandixon - I use both 5.1 and digital and use the one that produces the best sound based on the dvd movie I'm playing.

I just got my hands on the service manual for this player. Here are some facts.

It uses a Silicon Image HDMI transmitter...

http://www.siimage.com/products/overview_sii9030.asp

The video DAC is an ADV7300...

http://www.analog.com/en/prod/0,2877,ADV7300A,00.html

The audio DAC is an AK4358....

http://www.asahi-kasei.co.jp/akm/en/...58/ak4358.html

The deinterlacer and scaler appear to be Sony proprietary IC's.

The ADV7300 has built in SD and HD test patterns?

Wouldn't that be great to access!

There is no such thing as SACD for DVD Movies. It is an Audio only bitstream and is not defined for DVD - not even with the upcoming HD formats.

Connect both for usage with SACD and DVD.

I believe his question was whether the 5.1 analog or digital output would be better for audio when playing DVD's. I believe he understands the 5.1 analog connections are needed for SACD.

Received the sony dvd player today(ordered from sony style). My first reaction is that I am not very impressed. It did not blow me away as I had expected. The picture has a soft look to it, even in 1080i via hdmi cable. My tv is a CRT which has been known to not have a great effect with upconverting dvd players. I did however own the denon 1910 for a few weeks and the picture quality of that machine was a TON sharper then the sony. If denon didnt have the shake at 1080 and the green push I would have kept it in a heart beat. I feel from what I have owned is that the denon 1910 is the best if it didnt have the green push/shake. Sony would be second. Then the Zenith. I saw no problems with the sony via hdmi. Black crush, white crush, push of a color, etc. The sound of the Sony was REALLY good(probably due to the hdmi cable). If anyone has any questions let me know. I am not a guru, so keep em simple.
Why don't you just buy a good quality 480P DVD player and forget about an upscaling player. I'm very distrustful of upconverting DVD players, seems a bit like "snake oil" to me. Why don't you just wait until true HD-DVD comes out and stop waisting money on some "cheesy" so-called upconverting player.
