My Sony DVD player just died and I need to pick up a new one.

For now I need a unit that upconverts over component, but that also has HDMI for later. It'll be currently connected to a Toshiba 56"W RPTV at 1080i (component). I'll upgrade to a 50" PDP later this year (HDMI).

I know some of the LG units have hacks to enable upconversion over component even on copy protected DVDs. Here's some of the choices.

LG DV7832NXC , older model, Canadian equivalent to the Zenith DVB318, firmware hacks.

LG LDA-531 more recent model also with firmware hacks and better than the newest LDA-731 which doesnt upconvert over component and has an inferior pic according to most reports on this forum.

I know Samsung has some models like the 841 & 851 that upconvert but can't remember if it's over component.

What do you guys recommend and why? Have I missed something ?

Thanks!

The Samsung 841 and 941 will both upconvert over component (disables HDCP which allows the upconverted image to be transmitted over component ouputs) with a simple remote "hack". They're good, inexpensive players.

hmmm... I'm an Oppo owner but I have an issue with the fact that I have to use the zoom button to fill the screen on older DVDs. Does the samsung unit have a better screen filling mode? It sucks to have to watch a widescreen movie in the center of the screen.
