Meant no disrespect to your fine system. Replacing components other than the transport will have a bigger impact.

Hi Styln,
No disrespect taken , I know you were giving your best advice.
Truth be told I would not mind trading the Yammie for a Sherborne or a Marantz, but I can't afford it at this time.
Thanks for your help.

For those wondering, I did a test using Disney's WOW DVD of the 970HD's scaler versus the built-in scaler in my new Samsung UN46D7000 (a 1920 x 1080 LCD panel). I used the Disney disc's 1-pixel checkerboard pattern, which shows any scaler issues as artifacts in the pattern (which should be perfectly uniform).

The short answer is that outputting 480p from the 970HD and letting the Samsung scale it up produces clearly better results than having the DVD player do it. It just goes to show how much this technology has come in the last 5 years.

I hadn't used my player in awhile and when I did I got the disc read error. Where do I go for answers? Here of course!

Once I read about oppo's great service policy, I sent them an email and got an immediate response. Per their email and what others have posted here, they will fix any repair for $38. That includes shipping the unit back to you.

What a great company!

Great to hear that about the $38 repair fee .... I've got a a DV-970HD that I never used hardly since getting Blu-ray.

Just tested it and it still works fine.

One question to all the board members here .... Why are used 970HD units fetching high dollars on Ebay?

Is there something I'm not aware of regarding this model?

I think the value of the 970HD is the ability for component based upconversion (720p and 1080i) with a hack.

That's exactly what I got mine for. I have a 1080i only TV that only has component inputs. I applied the hack/firmware after I got the 970HD off Craigslist. I think I paid around $60 at the time.

Like George-O mentioned, since Blu-ray, I don't use the oppo much, and use my PS3 for Blu-ray and the occasional DVD now. I do have quite a few SACD's and DVD Audio discs that I still need the oppo for.

If and when the day comes that I want a dedicated Blu-ray player, it will be an oppo. Their service on my 970 has assured me as a future customer.

I forgot to mention, even though I still have the same old 1080i TV, I can now get the benefits of the PS3 up-conversion of DVD's because I bought a HD Fury 2 that gives me HDMI for the TV. The HD Fury was truly a lifesaver for my (and my TV) and it works great.

Does anyone have the iso file for the hack component mod or a current link? I picked up a 2nd 970 and it wasn't modded.

It also shows a V2.4 not 2.3 like my older player by the serial number sticker if that matters.

^ Why? I've seen the 980 go for less.

I just sold one a couple of weeks earlier and only got $70. eBay is funny, the same stuff goes high one week and the next low, like this for example.
I have no idea why anyone would pay $160 for a 5 year old SD DVD player when it sold for $150 new.

About as bad as that DTVPal DVR selling for over $300.

Someone on my local Craigslist was recently selling one for $15. He bumped the listing three times too.

One extreme or the other.
I almost never think of Craigslist either, apparently nor did anyone in your market.
