I am looking for an affordable (< $400) DVD upconverter, that has a zero layer change (like the Denon 2900), great upconversion (like the Oppo) and excellent sound (DVD-A, SACD) like the Denon 2900? Does this exist? Would the NEW oppo 981 be it? Denon?

Any advice?

I am looking replace my Denon 2900.

Thanks.

zero layer change and universal and upconverter pretty much limits you to oppo 970HD.

Thanks. Do you feel the 1930ci/757 has equal/better audio quality vs the 2900?
Are you aware of any reviews of the 1930ci vs Oppo or have personal experience of a comparison?

No way. The 2900 has better audio DACs (assuming you are using the player's DACs). The 2900 was a top Denon player; the 1930 is a bottom of the line Denon. You need to go to the 3910 or 3930 to get better audio than the 2900. (And the 2930 and 2910 have the same audio DACs as the 2200.)

Thanks. I love my 2900 for hi rez audio; just poking around and seeing what's out there from Denon. I will be at CES next week, maybe Denon will have something new and exciting?

The 2930 and 3930 are both relatively new, so I doubt it. I would expect a high def player from Denon late in the year (maybe there could be some info on that at the show).

1930ci/757 bottom of the line? the 1930ci sold for like $800 when it first came out and is one of the best 1080p upconvert players. there is way lower end denons including the non upconvert 525 or whatever and others.

I believe you're confusing the 1930 for the 2930, which sold for $800. The 1930 is the replacement for the 1910/1920 and is a $350 player (if you paid $800, you got ripped off).

The audio DACs (which is what my post was about) are not as good in the 1930 as the 2930, which are not as good as the 3930. OK, I exaggerated, the 1930 is not bottom of the line, but it is not a "high end" Denon either. The OP is looking for the audio performance of the 2900 -- he will be disappointed with the 1930 for audio. Even the 3930 is reportedly not as good as the 3910 for audio, based on a few comparison posts in the 2930/3930 thread.

I'm VERY biased towards NAD, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but for under $1,000 the NAD T585 is absolutely outstanding. I don't own one yet, but I listened to one and priced it at a local dealer and was simply amazed.

The Oppo can't compare to the NAD, but at under $200 the Oppo is the best bang for the buck in the home theater universe.

Why is there NO perfect equipment, only compromises?

This might be the source of the confusion. To give the proper perspective, the 2900 was replaced by the 3910, which was replaced by the 3930. The 2200 was replaced by the 2910 and the 2930. IMO, video was pretty close among these players (2200 vs 2900; 2910 vs 3910), but audio stepped up in a bigger way (2200 vs 2900; 2910 vs 3910).
