This evening, I decided to make some progress in my Netflix queue and fired up Underworld Evolution. It hit a major stutter right at a critical point, so I took the disc out, cleaned it, and tried again. No dice, same stutter. Tried a second cleaning, still problems.

On a lark, I popped it into my XBox 360 HD drive and it worked flawlessly.

Needless to say I'm concerned. The deck is nice (Yamaha 2300) but a bit long in the tooth. I'd hate to see it die on me, as DCDi decks are rarely cheap. Any ideas on what could be the problem, and if any of it is reparable by me?

TIA.

If it only happens on the one disc, I wouldn't worry too much now. Maybe start saving some $$$. Also, "cheap" is relative and means different things to different people. Is cheap $50, $150, or $200, etc.?

I don't know Butchie instead

The Netflix DVDs are so scratched, it's probably the DVD, not your player (your XBox may be a little better at playing scratched DVDs). If it keeps happening with multiple DVDs, then yes, time for a new player. The Oppos are great values, or the new Tosh A2 HD-DVD player.

Well, it's been behaving on other DVDs, but the other day it had read errors on several CDs, an audio book and a music CD. If this starts to happen more often, we may have a problem.
